Parasound here too, but I do remember I used a couple episode amps a couple years ago and the bulletin on that was the Sonos output being too hot for them so be careful turning up the gain on the amp.

Full output from a CONNECT is about 2.0 VRMS. If this is too much for the follow on amplifier, insert a pad.

It would have been great if the original poster would have followed up, to let us know what he found or did to solve the issue.

My money is on the Niles amplifiers. I don't like them and I bet the original poster solved his problems by swapping them out.

+1...the common denominator seems to be the Niles Amps.

We have been using Parasound for years with this setup with zero issues

We went thru several niles amps on this job before throwing in the towel. Niles tech support was not helpful and our distributor recommended the Parasound equipment. The sound quality is awesome on these amps!

Then there should have been audible distortion.

How audible it is would depend on the level settings for input and output. Not saying he falls in this group, but I know that a lot of people in this business have no clue about setting levels or, for that matter, what sounds good (never mind what sounds great). After working with some people, I don't assume any knowledge of signal path, level setting, knowing sound quality or how to configure a system in the best way. I have worked with people who couldn't calculate a series/parallel load if a gun was to their heads.

Personally, I doubt it's the amp and more a problem with the input level setting. Knowing that the output from the Sonos is 2 VRMS, the level MUST be lower than fully clockwise and in fact, the manual, which doesn't actually show the input sensitivity, recommends that the controls should remain at 12:00, as it comes from the factory. If the sensitivity when fully clockwise is 1VRMS for full output, I would guess that 12:00 requires 2VRMS.

Did you try setting the level controls below 12:00? Also, was the amplifier sharing an outlet with other high power output amplifiers or other heavy loads? Voltage drop could cause the same symptoms.

I have used the Niles amps and Episode with the same issue. The last amps from each of the above have been fine. I do keep inexpensive attenuaters in the van for this issue

Sonos outputs are way too hot for a lot of amps when set to fixed volume. I've asked them numerous times to allow us to set the level and THEN fix the volume control.

skynyrdfan has the right idea. We've used the PAC LC-1 line-level attenuators numerous times.

That is an excellent idea.

I also had a problem with the Niles Si 2150 in a sonos system , and I had the gains on the Niles set to 11:00. The amps go into protection at half sonus volume. I am running 1 pair of 8ohm speakers, there is no reason for these amps to go into protection. This has happened of a few occasions with different Niles Si 2150 amps. I have also used Parasound in the same system with no issues. I would say stay from the Niles Si series if using Sonos.

Niles SI series amps do not work with Sonos systems. I have had the same issues using the Niles amps with sonos. Amp gains set to 11:00 sonos at half volume running one pair of 8 ohm speakers and the Niles goes into protection, after a few protection trips and the amp has to go back to Niles for a new main board. On both occasions I replaced the Niles amps with Parasound and have no issues.
No more Niles for me!!
