For the fifth time in two years I get the pleasure of removing a less than two year old receiver, take it to the authorized repair center, wait a week and a half and then reinstall it to the system.

Lets play a round of guess the item in question...

Ok a few possibilities here.
1. Heat; are the products in a well vented location with nothing right on top?
2. ESD; Any surges or spikes? These usually come from a device with a Coax/Ethernet cable connection.
3. Overall poor 110 Volt grounding.

If you have seen multiple failures it is most likely one of the above and will continue until the actual cause is identified and corrected.

Those are all great possibilities, and worth examining on each job. BUT the offending TX-NR series receivers I have installed all seem to have the same exact issue.
Lets say it is poor power grounding... on so many jobs? I usually follow behind the cable company and check for proper ground. I place the network equipment on battery back up and or surge depending on the rack.
If it were a power tolerance issue, would that be because of cheaply protected circuits in the HDMI circuitry?

I have since moved on to Maraantz and really like their product much better. If there are issues I will only use Zektor switches instead of a receiver altogether.-- It is possible to designate their audio outputs as L/C/R RR/LR.
Tin foil hat session over

Great thoughts and a second on the Zektor product.
My reference to multiple failures assumed (my mistake) that fails were the same AVR at the same location..

Sorry if I came across sounding like a jerk.

I must have upset someone- no kidding a second customer just called to tell me he has no audio. Same model, installed within a few months of the other one. Bad batch from the manufacturer? Karma?

Maybe HTInaBox would be cheaper to deal with than this?

After I get these repaired or new ones, I may get an electrician to come in and verify these are on separate circuits, no shared grounds.

Is there a possibility of a class action suit? I know that has been asked before- maybe the chip maker?
We follow the specs, run higher end cables, for a standard that is "evolving" so fast you need new equipment every six months to stay current.
We take training classes from cynical industry experts who tell us half the class will be out of this field in five years because of all the issues hdmi and hdcp will create. Almost as if they know this tech is utter crap.
Ever wonder why your receiver is lighter than a BD player? Everything is all digital and that means digital video circuitry and digital audio (why do we need a Dac out of Apple TV to feed z2- analog circuit with a few transformers for speakers?) how did we get here?
Crappy smart tvs with more options than the casual viewer even cares about. California standards for energy compliance is the excuse to turn off the Ethernet port.

From now on- I am only selling Home Theater in a box with a nice crappy Vizio and some red and blue 3d glasses.

They have been fixing some of those affected models outside of warranty, so you might just try calling them and asking.

just sell Yamaha...HDMI problems go away.

But seriously if you're still complaining about Onkyo (or Integra) receivers and HDMI, shame on you for not changing your way for the last 4 generations. I've been told they finally resolved the issue with the newest generation...but am I going to trust them/risk it??? take a guess.

And can confirm multiple units repaired out of warranty at no cost. It's a defective design where the HDMI board basically melts (my guess is the solder melts then short circuits).
