sucks to be me! I potentially need to put a pair of speakers into a fire rated wall in NYC so I thought I'd do a quick search. "fire rated" came up with nothing. What should I be searching for?

Talk to your rep or your distributor. Call Sonance. Call Soundolier -- they definitely make fire rated speakers.

Try searching for plenum instead of fire rated.

Where did you search? I just did a google search for "fire ratedspeakers." Apparently they have killed off Wesley's entry if that is where you found it!
The first several of 85,100 entries are
Digital Video Systems
homecontrols.com
phonicear.com
wildwestelectronics.net
lowellmfg.com

By the way, in my book, you now qualify as the writer of the best name of a thread ever at remotecentral.com.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ceiling or wall mount?

How about the JBL Pro Control Contractor series speakers, either the model 26 c or smaller 24 c?

The back cans are steel.....

did it again "fire rated speakers" and that's the first one that came up. Gives me the creeps.

Thanks for the advice. I did a quick internet search of all those sites before I posted, but didn't see anything fire wall rated. I'll be on site in the AM (and will try to avoid another $115 parking ticket, who's the idiot now) to see if it's even an issue or if they went with the interior wall. I just wanted to have some info if needed.

Do you have to have fire-rated speakers or a 1-hour block for a firewall? If you only need a 1-hour block, several manufacturers make fire-rated back boxes.

Jeff,
Wesley was this guy who had answers to all our problems in life. He summed them up in about a page and a half here!

Speakercraft also makes Fire Rated Back cans for all their In-Wall/In-Ceiling speakers. Recently did a Bar in Chicago with an apartment above that required fire Rating of 2 Hour burn.

Gotta say that it was fun looking over that old post.

Not the initial wesleyism (can we make that a new term for Ultimate Solution Providers That Obsolete Professional Installers Expertise - USPTOPIE won't work) but the responses. I had forgotten that and kept looking for his comeback.

None.

Damn the title of this thread is funny - of course you have to know the background behind it.

Thanks for the replies guys. As it turns out the depth of the wall is bit under three inches so I'm no even going to attempt back cans. I'm going to need to get pricing on the "plastered" speakers discussed before. I think that's the only realistic solution. They didn't want to see grills anyway so now they won't. Hopefully the fidelity is respectable.

See Stealth Acoustics out of Mt. Vernon WA. I can't say they are awesome sounding but we've done 12 pairs and haven't replaced one yet.
