We have a custom theater install in our showroom, we also have another speaker line (James Loudspeakers) that we would like to use in the theater. We were wondering if anyone out there knew of a 5.1 surround sound switching device. IE AB switch... Been searching , but have not been able to find a true 5.1 switch.. Sure we have speaker selectors for the other areas , but there we are only using pairs of speakers. Any info would be greatly appreciated.. We would rather not have to use an additional amp and redo our touchscreens for that.
The problem is between the chair and the keyboard.

Sounds like a job for a matrix switcher. Something completely controlable like Sierra. Don't know of a cheaper option.

build a simple panel with non shorting DTDP switches. Label them as per each speaker. Total parts won't exceed $100.00

Or,

Make it really cool using a remote control speaker switch. I built one last year for CEDIA, where by hitting a button it switched all the speakers from A to B. Used Xantech SR21's. Worked great.

You could do the same thing with 3 D.P.D.T. relays. Simple diagram upon request.

yep, one button is the way to go. and the DPDT relays would only add another few bucks to the cost. Wait a minute, add a 12 volt power supply, scratch four switches,, Might even be less.

Niles Audio used to make an eight pair speaker switcher for things like this, the AB-8. Front panel buttons or low voltage triggered. Still have one in the back room if you need it. Rugged, and not $$$$$.

Yeah, but doesn't that switch only two channels of audio? You would need two and a half of these for 5.1. I did this for a guy a few years back. Looked dumb but worked.

This does not address switching the sub. I would put it in high level input mode for this setup.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I think I had an AB8 once and got rid of it - as I remember, it was from the Dolby Surround days and only switched four speakers at a time.

If it had switched five channels, I am certain I would have kept it.

The Niles AB8 is described here, and appears to be available here. It does indeed switch up to 8 channels, and there's even a remote available at the second link.
