You can use any standard Dish Network IR remote that is set to address 1. If you need to change the address due to the 921 being on another one, just make sure that they are the same.

Yes the 811/921's will respond to the stndard ir codes......except for the PVR funtions. You could clone a 721 remote for these features, but there are some codes that don't quite get it done. There is another option: The 811/921's have a "teaching" feature built into the receiver! In the setup menu there is an option for teaching learning remotes. The IR "blaster" on the front of the receiver becomes a remote sender (you have to use the receiver as the new remotes work in RF ONLY for the 811/921's, and as such you can't use them to teach with). In this mode, each button you press on the remote is then sent out IR from the front panel of the receiver.
Note: The 921's will respond to discrete on, but not off as yet- an issue with the dual tuners. The 811's work fine.

I just had this issue with an 811 this week. I was using a mx-500 and even called dish and universal remotes. And both said no go. But I was able to find one code by scrolling thru all the codes, that would power up and down and also control channels but customer was not happy with that. He returned the remote and now is using 4 remotes.

I haven't found this Learning Remote function on either my 811 or 921. Where in the setup menu did you find it?

Dish network tech says the new receivers will NOT accept an IR input. I am going to only recommend Direct TV until this problem is resolved. It is foolish of Dish to make a product that cannot be controlled by any other remote.

I heartily agree with you on this issue. As cool as the Dish remote is and works, it will not do everything that my customers want it to do. And we all know that our customers will not accept that they must use two or more remote controls to access their home entertainment.

Yes the Dish units will "Teach" an MX500/700. I did it recently. You do have to be patient and sometimes try a particular buton more than once, but it Does work! Don't trust ANYTHING that a CSR from Dish (or Direct for that matter )says. They are just reading from a screen, and they are the LAST ones to get the latest info. I recently had one tell my customer that the 921 would NOT run a DPP44 switch or the new seperator. Even though dish had just spooled the software two days prior. I of course had to go to the guys house and set it up right. AND BEHOLD, IT WORKS!
The Dish remote teahcing is on the system setup screen, and then under "Diagnostics". It seams like a weird place to put it but it is there. If it's missing, get the system info page and note what software version you are using. I will try to list the latest ver for the 811, but I know the 921 is "L186....". I'll be out for the nex two days , but I'll try to get back with confirmation of the software version for the 811 asap.

As far as the 910 not accepting ir commands, they are full of it. I used the customers old Dish remote as well as ir codes from my library and they worked fine. It's just the dvr functions that are needed !!!!!

Did a 921 drop into a pronto I had done for th customer already. There was a CCF availble for it. It was the wrong address so I cut and pasted the hex into notepad and found the recevier I d Address in the string. changed the value and had a controlable unit.

Most of the commands are int he DiSH remote codes that are default in a pronto tsu7000. for about 6 codes I had to do the dance described above.

Sorry guys! I was partailly wrong about the 921- it dose NOT have the teach function in the diagnostics screen, but the 811 dose. It is correct that these receivers respond to the old dish remotes and codes. It's just that the remotes that come with these units are UHF only in the SAT mode, so you have to teach universal remotes with either an 811 or an older remote. The best remote to teach with is a 721, as it has al of the PVR/DVR and dual tuner commands (PIP). You might also need a 6000 remote for HD/SD and ASPECT (*), and a 508 or newer remote for search (#). With all af that in hand you will have enough for a complete 921 remote. There is a CCF on dbstalk.com, but I'm not sure how complete it is.

Actually you didn't make a mistake. Re teaching and learning on a 921, press menu, 6, 5, yes, and blast away. Just programmed an MX-500 -- works perfectly, although you will need to be patient and go through the process for some keys several times. This procedure handles both the sat AND dvr functions; better than limping along using the 122 code for sat functions, and having to use the dish remote for all dvr functions. Can someone explain to me why dish's techs are unaware of this function??????
