My best practice is to have the pro hook up the stat and then communicate with it.

Fully agree. When we do anything relating to HVAC it involves us handing over the tstats to the HVAC contractor and saying "here you go, hook them up and make them work manually like a traditional tstat". If you think the Sunday "emergency" calls for no TV service are a pain...wait til you get the real emergency calls for no A/C in the middle of Summer! I don't care to have anything to do with it. Even in a centralized system with all of the tstats mounted in an enclosure they all should be labeled what the zone is and should have printed instructions on how to operate them manually like the good ol' days.

How about this!...I would call that a snafu!

Aprilaire had some hiccups out of the gate with the 8800 communicating series, and the fix was the exact same thing listed here... dedicated power.

They are extremely reliable now.

Dedicated power should be considered a best practice on any 'smart' thermostat.

The #1 drawback to NEST vs Aprilaire is that the NEST is not compatible with as many advanced heating and cooling systems.

If your clients home (or your own home) has a sophisticated HVAC system, Aprilaire may be a better choice. For the more straightforward HVAC systems, the online and iOS/Android UI from NEST is pretty compelling.

+whatever we are at for letting the HVAC install the stats and own any issues moving forward. We had a job we did HAI tstats in. Got a call from homeowner saying it does not work in one zone. Of course I stopped by and checked voltage at the stat. No voltage on common. We had the HVAC guy hook up commons on all stats from the beginning. I had to open up his panel and test the 24VAC transformer. It was dead. I had her call her HVAC guy while I was there and let me explain what I had found. I then charged her for me figuring out his problem for him. :)

We normally use Aprilaire 8800 stats and RS232 hub for control. We do not even source the hardware. We just tell the HVAC contractor what to install. Once it is installed and working, we connect to it. Period. Same with security systems.

I've installed a few Nest & only had 1 issue.

The thermostat would prematurely shut off & turn back on when cooling. "Short cycling" itself. TS was very helpful & said the issue was with the "common wire". Turns out on the previous thermostat the common was not needed so it was folded back. When I installed Nest I figured "well I guess this wire doesn't need to be hooked up". Well i called TS and he said to open the furnace. When I did I saw the common wire was connected at the unit so I hooked it up at the Nest. Problem solved!!!!

I keep a few stocked in my truck as a nice up sell before I leave the customers house. I also stock those Lutron Caseta Wireless kits as well as those Decora USB outlets. Customers love those!!!!!
Knowing that Gold went up a few K makes me think "well now I have to do a better job on selling more equipment".

I've mentioned it before, but I've been doing long-term testing of a first generation Nest, and so far it's been no trouble whatsoever. Never crashed, locked up, lost its internet connection, or done wonky things...

The only quirk I've had is sometimes it will kick from 1st to 2nd stage heating for a very short amount of time before shutting off (temperature reached).
