Has anyone ever used a motion sensor or maybe a sensor under the carpet as a trigger?

My idea is for a theater room lobby. I want movie soundtrack music to play when someone enters the room. I was thinking of using a CD changer set to RANDOM that would stay on 100% of the time. I would power the speakers with a Niles amp with a 12v trigger for turn on. I just need a sensor to send out a 12v trigger.

Any ideas?

Probably the easiest is to use a two-piece photocell system, and use the output to trigger a relay or switch a 12v wall-wart.

A PIR sensor for an alarm system would work pretty well for this. I do not know what kind of output they have when they sense motion, but I assume it is a relay closure, or a lowering of impedance, or sending out a voltage...any one of which could be used to send a signal.

Let's say it is a relay closure: I believe Xantech has some kind of product that can issue a macro upon receiving a voltage. Voila, you are done.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I need to understand this. The client is going to the expense of building a dedicated theater with a seperate theater lobby. He would also like the ability to automate the lobby. I'm sure the next question is going to be setting a start movie scene to get people from the lobby to there seats and also displaying video in the lobby so nobody misses the movie why they get up to get a drink. My guess is you are not using a control system, or this question would not come up. Please for the sake of everybody involved, rethink the theater design. Then you could just run a PIR or shock sensor into an I/O port on the control system to trigger anything you would like.

a CD player at random would be just that. Random. If you really want to play a specific piece of music, think about using a digital sampler with a midi trigger. I'm sure you can find an old early sampler out there for low cost

A CD Player on random also takes a long time to get going. The People cold alk all they across the lobby and into the theater before the Player decided what sont to play and started playing.
Digital is the way to go. Several companies produce Digital/MP3 Sampler boxes that can be triggered via COntact closure or RS-232 Thats all ya need....
