I, like most of you, run Ad blocking software and up until recently have never seen adware show up on RC. However, over the past few days I have had Spybot inform me that DoubleClick is trying to download every time I change pages or come to RC.

Daniel, is this something you are aware of?

Am I the only one seeing/having this problem?

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

Happy 4th to you too!

I've not had any popup issues while visiting RC, specifically. I run Ad-Aware from time to time.

And I use this to keep my Registry from being written to. It's really small:

Has anyone noticed Google is doing nothing for the 4th? Aren't they an American company?

That's very strange! Wonder what's behind it?

HDTVJunkie,

I run Adaware also and I run SpyBot Search and Destroy as well. Spybot is catching the stuff that Adaware isnt. I am using WinPatrol for a startup monitor and Spybot also has a utility built in as well. I use RegCleaner for tweaking my registry. When I came to RC just now I got a warning from Spybot asking if I wanted to download DoubleClick and it also informed me that it is a 'banned' program. I dont believe it is anything other than a 'popup' program but still, this is a new thing for the RC website. I have been running the above software for at least 6 months and never had an issue with this site. Just wondered if it was something that Daniel was or was not aware of.

Thanks for the heads up on Spybot AV. Your adware protection seems tighter than a... well, nvr mind about that. I'll just say it sounds really good to me.

How do you like RegCleaner? Find and destroy with regedit is tedious work.

Are you sure it's not just informing you about a cookie? I *never* run ad software, but just downloaded and installed Spybot and the only thing it found was a pile of cookies, one of them from DoubleClick.

Positive, Daniel, would not have said anything otherwise. As I said before, its probably nothing serious and is probably the cookie trying to set but I do get a 'warning' about it when I change pages. I will monitor times of day that I come here and my IP address so that you can try and figure it out, if you like.

HDTVJunkie,

My ad protection has saved my butt many times in the past. I have 'fixed' several computers recently for others that have been 'infected' by trojans. Nortons didnt even catch half of these bugs. I dont use Nortons, use AVG instead, and with this other protection(knock on wood) have never had any problems.
RegEdit and RegCleaner are amongst my favorite programs. I actually like removing the harder 'bugs' manually. Must be a 'geek' thing.

The regedit, that I was refering to, is the manual way. I'm quite tired of it. I'll try the regcleaner you use. Thanks. I love Norton, but they are hit and miss on adware.

This Remote Central pop-up is very interesting. Have you tried creating a HijackThis log and posting it on one of the sites that are dedicated to clean pcs? I'd be curious what they might have to say on the matter.

If you download the Google toolbar, it has a popup blocker. I'm not sure the technical nature of it, but I've never had a popup since.

One website for internet radio created a popup when I clicked on different stations. The Google popup blocker wouldn't let it open; the website said to hold down the ctrl key when I clicked to allow it.

Seems to be pretty good on popups. It keeps a tally of how many blocked and I am at 80 right now.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

You're lucky you've only hit 80 popups blocked. Right now I think my main desktop at home is around 2600.

I'm fixing a computer right now for my mother-in-law. Ad-aware is still going at 240 objects recognized. Don't you just love the ubiquitous nature of the internet??

I use SurfSecret's popup eliminator with great (7,357 so far) results, it's like 25-30 bucks for the download.....well worth it, IMHO...

I have to give both thumbs up to Google for a pop-up blocker. Have used it since the day it first became available. Not only works well, but is free. Hard combination to beat.

The google toolbar/popup blocker works great for popups but is considered to be a spyware program in that it sends your web activity log to google for whatever reason. This may or may not include login names and passwords so be careful.

Google Toolbar (4532 blocked so far, about 2 months)

AVG v6.0 antivirus

Spybot S&D v1.2

ZoneAlarm v2.6.231

All free, and all work well.
