This house is full of cat5 and I'd like to take the audio from the main system upstairs to a couple locations. Is there an inexpensive system to run audio from RCA outs to cat5 and back to RCAs?

Thanks!

There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

You can solder RCAs to the twisted pairs and it may work out alright if the distance isn't too great.

Otherwise, use passive baluns like these:

...or active ones like these:

I've used both, and have not noticed any difference.

There are tons of passive baluns available out there, and most are fairly reliable. Some of the cheaper ones, however, have had trouble. Stick with a manufacturer that has been around for a while.

Try this link, I have used these, and they work great. They make a standalone, and an in-wall decora module.

I use the elan cat-5 line drivers, the source locations install into a single gang box and I screw the destination boxes to a blank panel in the back of the rack at distribution.
They work very well.
