sony has released the PS3 "superslim" its a smaller version of the slim but instead of a slot load it loads in from the top with this slide cover thing. Absolutely impossible to rack without placing it on a drawer or leave a 3U open space above it.

doing a small cabinet rack today with a customer supplied PS3 and this is what they gave me, thinking it was going to be the slim. Totally screwed, i told the customer this is impossible to mount especially in this small of rack. They called around and found a ps3 "slim" at kmart.

This is almost going to have to be a forced separate component on a shelf, especially when using cabinet racks. this is really ignorant on sonys part, They are going backwards with the design!

You have been graciously warned, if you guys have spec jobs with PS3's/racks in them and trim out isnt for a few more months the i suggest you try to find a slim ASAP

As someone who enjoys video games, I can't imagine ever wanting my game system somewhere else in the house, so that I have to walk to another room to change games. Add to this the problems with wireless controllers for the XBox, Issues with Kinect, and the fact that who knows what issues will crop up with the new version of XBox slated for Christmas next year.

This ranks right up there with putting my Blu-Ray player in the rack, elsewhere in the house.

Both seem incredibly impractical to me... So why do it?

PS: I don't buy the excuses about the decorator doesn't like how it looks, as it can be hidden in a cabinet close to the display.

You may want to reread the original post. He IS putting it in a cabinet, a rack in a cabinet. Not all racks go in a closet, a lot go into cabinets right next to the TV.

TRC,
not to be Captain Obvious again, but when someone says "put it in a cabinet," they usually don't mean put it in a rack inside a cabinet.

We just did this in a theater where the client had the choice of haing the PS3 next to a seat in the bottom of an end table, or in a cubby hole on the back wall. He chose the cubby hole.

By the way, I expect another issue with "inside a rack" to be remote control range... aren't these controlled by RF, which does not go through steel too awfully well?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

If it's a new installation we will not take the project unless a rack in the cabinet is being used. I am not going to be the person that creates a wire mess in the cabinet that prevents future servicing or reliability. That normally means a mini rack adjacent to the TV. The game consoles do not have issues unless you're getting close to the normal distance they fall out of range because you're not using side panels on a SRSR.

Except that he explicitly states it's a rack in a cabinet, and this is a thread about rack issues caused by the new ps3 design.

Seems to me a sliding shelf and clever cable management should make this workable. Unnecessary and annoying, but if it were easy they wouldn't pay us!

exactly! Couldn't of said it better myself! In this case it was right below the tv in a custom cabinet that was made specifically for my small rack. I can't stand dealing with equipment not in a rack, no matter how neat you are it always becomes a jumbled cluster f@%*

Umm, yeah, every cabinet gets a rack, every time. Plain and simple. Nothing new here...
