How is 2, enter a discrete code? If it is already on it will go to either channel 2 or out here it would go to the music guide once you hit enter.

I havent seen this work on a SA box in about 4 years. So he either has a real old box, or real old information.

McNasty's right.... its definatly NOT a discrete code, this was from a Pre-Music choice analog Cable box. Actualy, any Channel entry would turn the box on "CH+/CH-" even...

For Explorer generation boxes, you have 2 choices...

1) put a LV power supply (generally 9-12vdc) and either run through a resistor network or use it to throw a solenoid. if you are using a smart automation system, you can monitor the power status of the box through voltage or contact sense. (you have to enable the "on w/ box" option for the AC outlet in the setup menu). if you are not using a more capable automation system, but something somewhat intelligent such as one of the later Pronts's, you could run 2 ir outputs from RF receiver /IR sender through the solenoid (1no, 1nc) and in your power on macro, pulse the power command through the nc connection, and allow all other commands to route through the no connection. ...this way, the box should get the power command whenever the ac outlet is switched off. the same logic can be used with sensors such as the Niles LS-1.

2) the NYC TWC boxes (don't know about other areas) allow one to schedule automatic power on times. i usually set the boxes to power on weekdays at 5 AM. that way, if the box does turn off somehow, it will correct itself by the next AM. not as realiable as the first method, but better than nothing.

What's even more screwed with the Explorer 8000HD box I have is that it turns itself off after 4 hours of no button presses.

The Hi Def S.A. boxes used in my neck of the woods DO allow two options for powering up. If you dwelve into the setting you'll see a "power on" option. Go into this and you'll find " power" or "power, numeric". By selecting the second option any time the box "see's" a number press it will turn on (if off) obviousley this will have no effect should the box allready be live. I have not ever found any discrete offs however as stated earlier a work around is press "2" then "power toggle"

Just curious:

Why?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

What A&E said is true only if the cable company offers this. I have seen some explorers that dont. It works well if Tivo is controlling the box. I use "0" then "exit" to turn on in my Tivo macros just in case the box shuts off from a cable company upgrade. When you use a number to turn box on, the SA Explorer tunes to that channel. Not all the cable providers offer this feature. I'm not sure why you would want to turn it off. I dont think the box shuts down, but the AV outputs do.
