I am trying to get a 46" gateway to stop tearing at the top of the screen. I have it hooked up to the DVI output of a Scientific Atlanta HD Cable box, because there is only one Component input. (There is also a VGA input but no option for RGB/COMPONENT)
So, I have the DVD plugged in to the Component and the Cable box plugged into the DVI.
The problem is that most of the channels are tearing at the top. Now there's a screen for moving the picture on the screen: up, down, left, right, but that is all greyed out.
Gateway has been ZERO help and Cable has no clue.
Help please,
Thanks,
Thursday

Is the tearing mostly on your local broadcasts and not on anything else?

It's on almost every channel.

I had that problem on an analogue box more than once, and a cable amplifier cleared it up. I've never had it on a digital box though. From your profile I see your a Cablevision customer as am I. If it's on Channels below 80, you're in the analogue realm and that may be it. I would make sure the household cabling is "right". As a test you could just drop a test cable from cable drop to the cable box in question and eliminate the house from the equation

I have seen this happen on a Samsung plasma.
Turned out to be a defective grounding block on the incoming cable. Try grounding the F connector on the incoming cable. If this reduces or eliminates the tearing, check incoming grounding block or install a Xantech ground breaker in series with the incoming cable.
