Sorry for the ignorant question but AFTER initial setup does TIVO REALLY require a phone line. I'm thinking of an RV type of setup where there will not always be a phone line set up. Regular DirecTV receivers will work fine in this situation but how about TIVO?

Any thoughts/advice appreciated.

My D-TiVo units seem to require a minimum of one call per month, or the local channels stop working, the second tuner stops working, TiVo functions cease, etc.

Standard TiVo's use the telephone to get the Guide information.... They connect at least every 3 days to update.

With the Home media option they can use the ethernet to update the guide.

DirecTivo's use the dish for their guide info. Monthly phone call is for access card info.

I would figure an RV would use a DirecTivo receiver so unles your on the road for over a month you probobly wont notice a loss in data or service.

(Of course, if the're using Cable TV, might as well run 25,000 miles of phone wire alone with the 25,000 miles of Coax... 8-)

The least that will happen is that your recordings will miss their beginnings and endings if there are last minute TV schedule changes.

It will eventually stop recording all together until it makes a call. I've seen it happen.
