Hi All,

I'm finishing up a pool house (yes, even in MN I guess) that has the following equipment:

- Vizio 26", 55" and Sharp 70 (snap baluns and a KD 1x3)
- Denon avr4311
- 1 DirecTV box - new basic hd
- xBox
- Controlled by Pro Control Z remote, processor and iPad

The idea was to have it run like a single room system. Unfortunatley I was called after sheetrock so there is only 1 RG6 / cat5 siamese ran to pool house. Not a big deal, seems to work out ok.

Of course we're sitting there last night and the guy says "so can we watch Sat and listen to music at the same time?" Normal enough question, I just couldnt come up with an easy answer.

Obviously we have only one dtv box so my question is can I do something on that Denon to play DTV for video and Pandora (or airplay or ipod or any tunes) at the same time??

Thanks!

Set up an unused source that uses the DirecTV video input with audio from your selected audio device.

EX:

Setup menu - Input Setup - Input VCR - Video in - HDMI 1, Audio In - VCR Analog

I haven't worked with Denon in a while, so I don't know if the current units will support this type of setup. It should though.

That's a good idea and a great capability for any AV Receiver. Useta be that Yamahas (probably Denon, too; this is not an ad) would switch audio and video together, but if you were on a video source and switched to an audio source, the audio would switch but the video would stay where it was.

A cinematographer client wanted exactly this so he could put on whatever CD he wanted to and listen to it while reviewing dailies on the TV. And at any time at all, it's reasonable and really nice to just have on pictures, but select the audio you want.

Isn't this EXACTLY what you'd like to have happen if you want to have a bunch of photos rotating in the background, say, at a party? I was recently at a farewell party for someone where this would have been ideal.
We can't give you a good answer, or maybe any, without the make and model of everything.

Ernie, The part you are describing would be an ideal application for an Apple TV running a slideshow as a screensaver, with airplay or network music providing the tunes. That box is amazing for $99

Denon won't do this if you are using hdmi . We had a job last with the same receiver and tried everything to get this to work and it wouldn't . Den on said hdmi governing body does not let hdmi do the video select feature like you could do with component

I believe this is incorrect, at least on the new stuff. From my understanding you could wire another source into an audio input and assign that input to the cable tv source. Say you wired it to dig and assigned that input to cable tv, then you would send the command for cable tv, then the direct command for the audio input (ie dig or analog). Technically this only allows for that source to play on that other input so its a bit cumbersome but should do exactly what you are asking if you have the proper code set.

lol! they FINALLY got the NR1403/NR1603's in. Thats going to get me by for now. I ordered 5 of them so i wont have this issue this month, Assuming that A***s purchasing group forgets to order more in i should be covered for a bit. I have some pretty high end installs coming up in august. I have BETTER be able to get a 3313 and a couple SR6007's or 8's or what ever they're calling them now by then

as far as any denon models above 1911 im SOL. "They'll come in when they come in" is what ive been told.

If i could get ahold of the A$$hole at D&M that thought it would be a great idea to drop all their trusty reps for A*** he'd run away with his tail between his legs.

I have honestly never been so frustrated about something like this before in my life.

If you go into Menu, Input setup for the Sat source, you can select HDMI Auto or Analog for the audio. You should see 'Video' when you are in the menu for each source and you click on that, then use the < and > buttons to scroll through the available sources. To make it easy, I just use the analog output when I want to do this and select the source for Sat/Music. Call it whatever is easy to remember. Otherwise, it's not that hard to select the audio if analog inputs are used just for that particular combo.

On the 4311 , you are only allowed to assign an hmdi input to one source . And if you do something like force digital it cuts the video off . With newer denons this might have been added but on 4311 we tried everything and it wouldn't work and denons tech support and engineers told us we could not do this either . The only way to do this is to not have the 4311 do the video switching and have it go directly to the tv .

I would add a snap 4x4 and run the video directly to the tvs and the audio to the reciever .

So....I couldnt even get to the av sourcing issue yet. I like Easton's idea, Bruce I hope you're wrong :) I know I can do what I want on my old Denon, we'll see....

I was tweaking the remote, got the iPad and license rolling (which FYI is super easy via Pro Control for a not strong IT guy like me) but the stupid processor and 4311 would not talk via RS232 using the driver, IR was fine. I haven't done a lot of 232 but I dont remember having an issue in the past, plug and play I thought....

That is unless you're using Null modem when you're not suppose to, or Vice Verse.

There are some challenges to doing this with denon as noted. on the current units you can have HDMI with analog audio (but you loose surround sound in scenario's where that matters). You can not assign HDMI to 2 inputs one using HDMI audio, one using analog audio. I have a situation where I need to go out and test to see if the discrete input mode codes will resolve a similar issue so that zone 2 audio can be sync'ed.

With Yamaha's they've changed things around a bit recently. The question becomes how is the audio system set up? Is it a surround zone plus other speakers or just background fill. If background, run audio as zone 2 (with external amp if needed), and video switching through the main zone; and program accordingly.

How about using component on another input?
