I have done several systems with over 12 zone-players and have had no problems. I like Sonos because I can get in, get out and get paid. Today I installed 3 Play5's, 4 Play 3's, Airport Extreme. It took me less than an hour to place the speakers in each room, setup the Sonos System, setup for Rhapody, Pandora, and Music Library on two computers. I collected a $3000 check...Then it left me 7 hours to make more money for the rest of the day.

I know it was a few pages back, but I will clarify where BigPapa got the belief that there was a 7 zone limit. Sonos utilizes the Spanning Tree Protocol, which is a method of determining how data should be routed around a network. The STP protocol does not like being any more than 7 network switches deep, as the cost of the components gets artificially raised too high and data will start to broadcast over bad quality links (eg wifi).
We have plenty of 24± zone systems functioning very well in Australia,ad I can tell you that even some of them use standard ISP provided routers! That's good information and sounds familiar. The person who told me of a 7 zone soft ceiling didn't clarify. I've also talked to industry peers who've done larger systems and they've confirmed no problems, as long as the network is sound and you hardwire as much stuff as you can.

The only trouble I've had so far with wiring all the players together (could be 3 could be 12) is one player will eventually fall off line. Seems to happen after a software update. I've learned to remove the wired link to that player and let it connect wireless and all is well again.

Then you leave it connected on WiFi, or do you reconnect the hardwired connection?

There will be differing opinions on connecting multiple Sonos devices. Tech support will tell you if they are all in a rack they should all be hard wired to the switch for best network connectivity on the LAN but they should be 3' apart since the wireless is not able to be disabled and could cause loopback issues. Not exactly a realistic solution trying to keep them all 3' apart from each other in the same rack. That being said we have a job with 3 Connect's on the same shelf hard wired and then 3 docks on the same shelf (wireless obviously) at the same height on the rack next to the other one without issues.

We have a job with 6 amp units together in a cabinet and had all sorta of issues with different units randomly dropping off. Eventually we hardwired one and left the others to Sonos net and it seems to be better.
I just sold an autonomous MMS2 and am anxious to see how the final experience compares.

Eventually we hardwired one and left the others to Sonos net and it seems to be better. They were all originally hard wired, then you had problems and removed 5 from being hardwired? Or you had them all wireless and now one is not? It would be ideal if we could disable the wireless as we saw fit. Of course, this being more of a consumer-grade product that may be asking too much and I can understand their desire to keep the system as simple and closed-up as possible. We are likely expecting too much from these devices, knowing that they really are not interesting in the custom channel.
