LOL the temperature? Must be getting pretty sad over there in android land... gotta dream up things to bitch about.

You havent been paying attention too much. Ive been converting to iOS pretty quickly. Since Thanksgiving I have switched my wife's phone to an iPhone 4s, got a ATV2 for Christmas, bought 2 ipads, and am waiting for my renewal period so I can dump my X that google and verizon keep breaking with their updates and switch my phone too.

But it seems someone in engineering missed the heat issue on the new iPad. Everyone wondered what would happen to Apple when Jobs died. This isnt a great way to start of with their first real release after his death.

It is noticeably hotter and it's not the display. I have the iPad2 and the new iPad at the same display brightness and the new iPad gets hotter. I bet it's the new processor.
Who says you can't put 61" plasmas up on cantilever mounts using toggle bolts? <---Thanks Ernie ;)

That would be my first guess after display.

When running the same app on the 2 and 3... does the processor make any real world difference?

Are there specific apps that require the faster processor?

I want to get 2 ipads (me and the gf). Trying to decide whether or not i should get the 3. Retina display is not a must have for me.

retina is the only reason to get it!!!! everything, especially text, looks sharper.

i thought it might be the 4g radio, but it looks like some wifi models are warm to.
I love supporting product that supports me!

I used the price drop on the iPad2 to go ahead and get one for my wife (one in a family of five isn't enough). And I went with the refurb which ended up making it $150 less than full price. Which means she got a 32gb and mine is only 16. If you were going to buy the 16gb, you can almost buy three refurb iPad2s for what two new iPads would run.

My three runs hotter when I am downloading tons. Remember the battery has 70% more capacity, GPU went from a single core to a quad core, and the chip is teh A5 dual core. What do you really expect? The only time that mine, or customers have really heated up was when we were first setting it up, and sync'd all of the apps to download via the cloud. Other than that, I can't say that I have noticed an increase in temp at any other time.

And the screen is phenominal!!

CPUs generate heat, all of our laptops have fans that help dissipate that heat, yet no one seems to complain when the laptop gets warm. with the new cpu in ipad, convective cooling, and no ventilation I am not surprised it gets warm. What I am curious about is ... heat is one of Li-ion technologies biggest enemies, how will the added heat affect the battery over the long term.

Compared to my phones, my iPad 2 runs very cool. I can use it for hours and doesn't get hot at all and it is a 3G u it. I can't imagine that this new iPad is so much hotter that it's actually a problem, probably warm to touch at most.

But I think heat with a handheld tablet is a bigger deal than with a laptop.

Heat is not a friend of most electronics. Worse yet it stays inside the case because there are no real vents. On top of that you have an aluminum case that will hold more heat then plastic from a laptop.

The battery in the iOS devices has always bothered me. No way to change it and it won't last forever. I wish we could change them. My iPad2 loses power faster now then it did when knew.
