Do you have the electronics that go between the computer and the Niles parts? When these first came out, I vaguely remember that the software came along with the chassis that hooked it all together for programming. Without that chassis, the software is useless.

Anyone?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I believe that Niles charges a rather pricey sum for that software.

You also must attend training and pass a test to become an Intellicontrol installer to be allowed to purchase the programming equipment. It may be wise to find a qualified programmer to do this work unless you intend on investing in becomming a Niles Intellicontrol Dealer.

PennyG is correct, you need all those things to do a Niles intellicontrol. I can program it for you if you want.
How hard can this be?

EXACTLY. In fact, the situation with Xantech is the same. Their literature was terribly unclear on this point, making it seem like they charge hundreds of dollars for software, so I said "screw you" to them for at least five years. Funny thing is, I knew several people on the tech staff from working with them previously, and it took five years for someone to mention that the software is free but there is hardware involved.

Frankly, I think it was ridiculous of them to make a product that cannot connect directly to the computer, and needs a dolmetscher in between. But then, Crestron and AMX do that, and look how much their individual components cost in comparison to the IntelliControl.

Yes, but.... Look at all the universal remote controls that can talk directly to a computer for a fraction of the price of an intellicontrol...... Black Box technology is antiquated..... but some manufacturers are still haning on for some reason.

FYI, You don't need any special hardware to program Xantech anymore, haven't for years.

Crestron and AMX also both connect directly to the serial port on a computer....some of the touchpanels need to be hardwired to the controllers for their graphical interfaces, but actual programming is done from computer to controllers...Niles really is the only one that still has the go between (and still charges handsomely for it!)

No idea where you are James because your profile is incomplete, but Niles has representation in most parts of the US. I don't think they're stupid. Using the "black box" is about control. Not remote control but megalomaniacal control--over their distribution. Unfortunately you are frozen out unless you make the investment in time and $$$. Unless you are willing to take the plunge, I would suggest entertaining the offers here to program it for you.

Better yet, is your new customer a candidate for a Crestron or AMX control system? The sky's the limit if they are...

Most of the companies that do this have a closed sales system- to purchase and/or install it you have to be a dealer. The black-box requirement makes it harder for someone off the street to be able to install the equipment.

The software is free @ nilesaudio.com/techsupport. You do need the programmer.

I am not sure what is (or if there is) a consensus about requiring special programmers or software to program a system. As I see it, this protects established installers but really sucks for new installers and DIYS

Should manufacturer stop having such a “Gestapo” control over who installs their product? This is not limited to Niles but other manufacturers as well.
