That'll be a trick.... Only Television b roadcasts (ANtenna, Cable and Satellite) require Closed captioning to be included. I cant think of any VCR's that support it as the information simply isnt on the tape. As for DVD's your stuck with subtitles. pretty common.

Most Satellite boxes (HD anyway) have CC built in.

What exactly are you working with source wise?

Impaqt is partially correct.

Broadcasts are the only thing required to have CC in the transmissions. HOWEVER, Almost every DVD and Pre-Recorder VCR tape you buy has cc embedded in it. If you don't beleive me turn on CC on your display and throw in a tape or DVD. The VCR's or DVD player's do not have to have a CC decoder in them to transmit the signal to your display device. Only the display device need have the CC Decoder.
This will allow you to get all of your sources with CC on them. We've done this for several customers.

He is correct that you need a CC DECODER. I've never found a decoder that supported S-Video or Component Video. Only Composite Video. What we did/do is set up macros for each input that allow them to select wether they want to watch with CC or without. If they select the without option we use the best connection possible for that source. If they want CC then we run each source through the A/V receivers composite input. Then run the Composite output to a CC decoder which is then hooked up to the Composite input on the display device.

I agree with AVX. The cc info is embedded in your source material before the picture starts drawing in each and every field. It's in the same place as the sinc info, mts info, etc... It's pretty much always on the tape or disk. Here's an explination if you'd like. [Link: robson.org]

The TVs built-in cc decoder function is wrapped up in the tuner and so you need an external device if you want to pick it out of video. I don't know of an S device or component either. Sorry.

HDTV Junkie,

If you have a display device that has a CC Decoder built into it. That decoder will work on any of the analog inputs as well as the tuner. I have seen a few odd-ball sets where it only worked on the tuner but those have been scarce.

Now I admit I've never checked CC to see if it can be displayed through the HD input of a Display Device from a HD Sat system or a Progressive Scan DVD. I'll have to play with that this weekend and see what happens.

Geez, I need to get out more!

I'm stuck in a time when the brain of the TV primarily controlled the tuner. I looked at a few block diagrams of current TV sets, and the architecture of a few popular controllers, and learned that you must be correct. Closed caption proccessing occurs well outside the tuner and downstream from the video inputs on every model I saw.

I'm going to try CC through HD too. Everything I've seen indicates that it should work just fine, but seein's believin'.
