i have a directtv box, and vcr, which i've never had any trouble setting up. but hooking up this dvd really has me baffled. i plugged the yellow, red, and white wires into the tv and the back of the dvd player. i push play on the dvd player, and the light comes on. BUT i can't hear the dvd or see it. i can't even bring up the dvd menu or anything. what could i be doing wrong?

What is the DVD player connected to on the tv, the connections must be inputs.

I am assuming you have the television on the correct input??????

A lot of progressive scan DVD players will not have a composite video output if in progressive mode. Check to make sure this is not the case.

Make sure TV is set to DVD input, make sure DVD is set for coposite output and analog sound.
How hard can this be?

You frist have to make sure the TV Is facing North. Then stand on your head and put 16 gage 4 conductor Speaker Wire in your hair. After About 25 min the blood rusing to your head might give you a clue as to How to hook up your DVD PLayer!

Check the manual or look online for your model and it should tell you how to configure the DVD. DVD output needs to match capabilities of your TV. Try a different source (ie different DVD or even VCR) to make sure cable is good and TV input is working.

in future, remember that a DVD player will play CDs. Use an analog connection, put in a CD which will have no such "menu" problems), hit play, and you should then be able to find, by the sound, which input really is connected on the TV. Once you have that, the search for details is much smaller.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I can't decide who made up the more stupid name. Thompson with their who-input or Panasonic with their Action.

Aren't the symbols used for transports great? They are universal. How about the navigation set found on most remotes these days? Up-down-left-right and enter in the middle. This stuff is great for end users. Learn one remote, and understand them all.
