I Had a rep in a few days ago and he mentioned a touchscreen by alpine ( an in dash dvd player ) which had a tactile feedback? Anyone seen one of these and if so i wonder when that feedback will find its way into our remotes here in the home world??

alpine MAY be using a screen from a company called Farenheit, I saw one the other day wgile touring the A/V section of a new distributor in town...he mentioned something about them as well...I'll find out if Farenheit is an OEM, or if they HAVE an OEM, as I think he mentioned they make several peoples screens...

I have looked into this in the past fo BriJaws...but couldn't find anything! NOW hoever, I know who distributes them, so I'll give them a quick shout tomorrow!

The upcoming Sony Navitus RM-NX7000 has a tactile feedback screen.

I checked out the Alpine touchscreen at CES.
What I had hoped for based on the press reports was a touchscreen that you could 'feel' prior to pressing a button, so that you could find an button without looking down at the display.
In reality the Alpine unit is more of a gimic type of thing. When you press a button image on the touchscreen, you feel a tick in your finger tip. You only feel it after the button has been pressed, so no way to feel around first. Also, the tick happens to the entire screen all at once, so there is no localized feedback. The only feedback you get is that you just pressed *something*.
Overall, it is a neat toy that belongs in a low rider near you, but I'm not convinced that it is revolutionary or anything.

Revolution not!!!

I used to work for a POS manufacturing company that had these kind of LCD screens in the late 80's early 90's and sold them for the cost of your new born. The trick was a little relay with a pin behind the screen. Every time you "pressed" a button the relay would strike the back of the screen as a feedback.

Retro is in, long live disco.

Pay me enough and I'll stand there and hit you on the back of the head every time you press a button.

There is a software company working with Philips to provide a tactile feel to the buttons on a Pronto. Like you said, it's not to give you feedback as to where the button is, only to let you know that it is depressed. I played with it in an after hours demo at EHX last Fall. It's pretty cool, a lot better than a beep.
