"Dale Tucker sells advertising for Radio World and is a lover of broadcast nostalgia. He recently passed on a neat little tidbit from Bill Brister, chief engineer of KETH(TV) in Houston.

Bill was responding to a question on a Broadcast Net listserv as to the origin of the BNC connector. No, it's not British Naval Connector. Amphenol engineer Carl Concelman and Bell Labs engineer Paul Neill co-invented the BNC connector.

BNC? Of course it's (B)ayonet (N)eill (C)oncelman connector. The threaded version, the TNC, is (T)threaded (N)eill (C)oncelman connector."

I hear Sony is returning to the scene of the crime with a new system.I installed one DST system and serviced it till the client finally gave up. Frox was pitched to the store I was at and we said we weren't ready! They were about 10 years to early.

There's almost enough info there for a documetary Larry.

1. Why can't I stack my records?
2. My Vox Beatle amp plays my records just fine, why would I need stereo?
3. I need to clean these contacts. Take this styrofoam cup and get me some TF please.
4. Discrete, CD4, etc. etc? Can I just have my stereo back please?
5. Those are speakers? Electrowhatics?
6. If I promise not to play E. Power Biggs on pipe organ, can I live without a subwoofer?
7. Why does the channel change, all by itself, on our Advent every day, about the time my husband gets home from work?
8. Zerostat (still use it on clingy socks when the dryer finishes)
9. I paid 6 grand for this bird bath, and now all the channels are scrambled. I want to know what you're going to do about this!

Oh lord... I remember that one. My first job ever in this business was digging a 4'x4'x4' hole for one of those in 1984. And the guy gave me a cheap car stereo instead of money.

I'll bet I can STILL get a hundred different answers
for this: What IS a BNC (technical definition
of what the acronym stands for?!) He he he!

I remember reading somewhere that it stood for Bayonet Navy Connector. Yes? No?
Carpe diem!

Boy,

Glad to see I'm not the only old fart around here. Over 20 years now.

I like the one about 16/4 not always existing... yes Virginia, we used to run clear stuff with one side copper and one side silver and make up our own volume controls by using a Radio Shack rheostat cinched on to a drilled out plate from Pay-n-Pak (predecessor to Eagle... the predecessor to Lowes).

I can't remember how many Beta Hi-Fi VCRs I put in (still have one!).

8 Track Tapes (well, I've hated these for the songus interruptus feature and never actually sold one)

I did however raise manager's eyebrows in 1983-84 for clearing out the last of the TEAC reel-to-reel tape decks at Pacific Stereo (theres a test of age... how many West Coasters remember Pacific? land of the 70 point proprietary gear). A sailor had me set it up along with a Thorens Turntable and man I gotta say that thing was cool.

The gloves are off now that we're talkin' phono

1. Accutrac turntables (programmable by song; the high end one actually allowed you to stack six lp's and program song and disc.). Either one guy never played any lp's, or one I sold actually worked. Smart money says he never played any lp's....
2. Spiffs on phono cartridges. The Ortofon ff15 had a cost of $8, a selling price of $50, and a $10 bill from the sales manager as soon as the customer left the store. Those kept me in beer and lunch for two years....
3. House brand speakers vs. Advent speakers. Play the one song by Emmy Lou Harris, "Quarter moon in a ten cent town" and sell a pair of four ohm speakers. This is easy!
4. Stupid promotions, eg:
"Twenty Four hour sale"
5. Maxell udxlII90 vs TDK sa-c90
6. Technics SL-D2 turntables

7. High-fidelity stereo from a cassette?

You do remember the Nakamichi Dragon, don't you? Or the 1000 ZXL?

Now those were some kickass cassette decks!

When Nakamichi was a good name.

Yeah, I do remember the "Dragon". Whatever happened to Nakamichi? Sell out like Bose? Speaking of nostalgia, remember when Bose made a good speaker?
How hard can this be?

how many West Coasters remember Pacific?

Although I got most of my gear in the 70s from Fred Rated, I did get a car outfit for my 78 El Camino from your store in Orange.

In 1980 or 81 I was in my buddies video rental store, first one in Anaheim, drinking beer and watching movies till the wee hours when we heard a crash outside. Some crash-and-runners had backed a van through the front door of your store on State College Blvd., directly across the street from us, and snagged several VCRs. We called the cops, but they [the crooks] were gone in 30 seconds. No plates on the van. We counted 8 units being loaded in the van, but the store manager said the next day that 22 VCRs were missing. Go figure?

It's funny how time flies though isn't it?

I mean, do you REMEMBER the Sony CDP-1?

That's the one that started it all, the first commerically available CD player...

and people didn't think CD would catch on...

Then again, I know a guy who didn't think the internet would ever catch on, or work!
