Not very pretty but at the time, IMHO, was one of the best sounding surround sound system that you could buy.

I had a guy come into the store looking for surround sound. He had pair of Maggies and another pair on high end electrostatic speakers and was doing surround sound with them. He listened to the Atlantic Tech system for all of 5 minutes and said it blew away what he was using. Sad thing was Peter was about 10-15 years ahead of the curve.

I don't remember which model you mentioned. But I sent an email to Peter. Let's see what he comes back with.

It had a control/processor/source selector module, 5 small cube satellite speakers and a sub with that had all the amplifications built in it. We had it set up in a little waiting are that we had in the store. The TV was a Mits 35" in an oak cabinet.

He still is -- as President.

He was also the President of NAD USA back in the day. We've been friends for almost 30 years. Peter is one of a kind. He's got an amazing brain for business and marketing and a great sense of humor.

Peter was Atlantic Tech. He was the sales and marketing. He is a great asset in our industry. He's did several of the training sessions for HiFi Buys. You could ask him anything about audio and he would take the time to discuss it. He is also one of the few that would compare what he was doing against other companies and you felt that you were getting as unbiased opinion as possible.

I emailed Peter about that sat/sub and here's what he had to say:

"I believe he was referring to the Pattern Model 100. It was a sub /sat that was totally powered. It had a resemblance to the Bose AM-5 except that ours were tooled ABS not mdf. The powered woofer also drove the sats. Bose threatened to sue us but realized they could not win because ours was totally different. This system was historic in that it was the precursor to every multi-media speaker system for PC's. My partner at the time Tommy Friedman, went on to use that basic design in Altec Lansing's computer speakers. The rest is history.

A few months later we brought out the Pattern Model 200 which was the world's first HTIB (home theater in a box) It consisted of 5 pattern 100 SATs, a miniaturized pro-logic decode, a powered sub with all the channels of amplification, a color coded uni-cable for ease of connection, and a remote control. We sold thousands of them.

The large Japanese companies eventually overwhelmed us with their enormous economies of scale. But at the time it was fun. As a friend reminded me "Every pioneer occasionally gets an arrow in his back" It goes with the territory.

So with that experience, we probably are crazy enough to innovate again. Dawn at CEDIA you heard our next venture: Our H-PAS sound bar that for most customers will not require a subwoofer.( Performance down to the mid 40's without a sub). You heard it at CEDIA. Now the big boys are calling to inquire about licensing the technology. I guess we will never learn."

Dawn that's it the Pattern 200. The guy that had the 2 pair of expensive but mis-matched electrostats was blown away by how much better the Pattern 200 sounded. I started preaching matched speakers for surround sound because of Peter's system way before any of the other speaker manufacturers had a clue.
