We have to hang two 61' Sony plasma's over 2 fireplaces. The problem is that both fireplace’s have 1 1/2 thick Marble. We have never drilled though marble especially to hang a 61’ plasma not to mention the 1' hole we need for the wires.
Does anyone have any experience with marble? And if so, have any suggestions for me? We are making the customer sign a waiver but would like to avoid any complications.

Thanks for the input,
Lonny

Save yourself some risk and hire someone who does that for a living. Sometimes spending a few hundred saves thousands.

Lonny,

there are bits available that make it a breeze...they are made by Lennox, and cost about $350.00...marble is a soft stone, so the drilling is ok, but VERY messy.

Much as you would suggest that an electrician hire a pro to do A/V...I would suggest that you hire a pro to drill those holes.

Waiver or not, there's a GOOD chance you'll f$%k up the first time you ever try...or at least not make as pretty a hole as you's like.

The other side to that is this, you want to soend YOUR time and YOUR money to buy that drill bit and learn how to use it?

I am speaking from experience here...beleive me.

Around here, it would cost a 12 pack of beer and a reference to have a stone and tile guy make those cuts...get to know one...AND SIGN THE WAIVER!

A client wanted a 2" hole in a marble counter top. The local hardware store had a $17.00 hole saw, you know, the round ones with a 1/4" pilot bit, with a carbide pilot drill and a 2" diameter diamond cutter.

Carefully keeping the hole wet, running the drill at medium speed and not pushing too hard, it took over an hour to cut the hole. This was pushing down, not sideways.

Yes, hire a pro.

What is your hourly rate and what will a pro charge to do it? If they can do it much faster than you, don't feel bad -- that is just that much time you won't have to wait to run the wires.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I'd like to point out that IMO he should not only hire a "pro" but to be more specific should have the CLIENT contract directly with the "pro". That way all liability exists between the client and the pro. I would also recommend getting the client to interview and approve the pro along with you even if you find them.
