Love dredging up the oldies.

Maybe someone has brought this up, but I put in viglink into RC search and came up with this thread.

The reason is that I did a search on Doorbird and contact closure on my Iphone through the browser Ghostery and I got a nice thread with Ernie giving some great advice. However there were many red hyperlinks throughout the thread and one of the links in his thread brought me to ebay??

I then checked safari on my Iphone and it does the same. So when did RC get all these hyperlinks from viglink.com getting put into posts? I never noticed when using my mobile phone. I guess I'm late to this idea for monetization.

I'm sure that's what keeps the lights on here.

I'm seeing occasional rogue popups on other sites, but only on iPad Safari. The same site on my desktop does not throw these. I haven't seen any on Remote Central. As in the examples given here, it seems like an excuse to have the user click on something. I interpret these popups as an attempt to have me launch some malware. I close that browser window rather than clicking on the item. The next time that I visit the site this rogue popup may or many not appear. Usually, I'll avoid that site for a few days and the problem clears.

In my case the popup appears after I click on a legitimate navigation link on the primary site. I haven't seen any of these popups on a page where I have directly entered a URL.

I haven't looked into this in any detail, but my thought is that the primary site or one of their ad partners was hacked. I tried force closing Safari, even force closing everything, clearing the browser cache, and rebooting the iPad, but none of this will make the popups stop.

Perhaps someone is testing a malware injection scheme.

On my PC i don't see any red hyperlinks. I do see the word you searched for highlighted yellow anywhere it appears.

Then i tried my android pixel 2 and sure enough...red text links.

If you’re not logged in, Viglink links are added to most forum pages. If you’re logged into your RC account, regardless of whether you’re a site supporter or not, I’ve made it so that doesn’t happen. It’s been that way for years. Helps towards keeping the lights on here, while not impacting anyone who at least registers and logs in.

Thanks for the clarification, I usually did not “login” while perusing the site on my mobile device. Sure enough I just did and no more random hyperlinks.

I guess that’s why embedding links in posts has a different look/appearance.
