I use a Niles IR repeater to send R/C commands to certain components
behind a front projector screen. Have never had a problem with this until just recently when I purchased an LG 3510A DVD player. The 3510A remote works just fine when it is pointed directly at the DVD player. But when the IR signal is relayed via the Niles device, the DVD player is completely unresponsive. Does anyone know what's going on? Is it possible that the Niles repeater is filtering out certain commands? Or is it a question of IR signal strength? For what it's worth, the IR flasher (output from repeater) is taped directly to the front of the 3510A. The Nile's sensor is mounted about 14 feet from our normal seating position.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using the original remote or the programmed universal? Is there a flasher level setting? Is there an ir miniplug adaptor on the back of the dvd player or have you switched your flasher?
I ran into some really weird specific problems on a job with a receiver.
there are also ir magnifiers if certain components have a crappy ir receiver

I'm using the original remote. You know, I never thought to look for an adjustment. I'll check it out. Thanks. There is no IR miniplug adapter.

What exactly is an IR magnifier?

audioplex makes a little ir bug (i think its called) which goes over the devices sensor. it is concave, which iguess magnifies the signal. helped me out with a Parasound amp (known for horrible ir sensors) and a hd cable box. you may need to put the emitter over the bug or around it. takes some playing with to figure out the best positioning.
is the niles piece the irz6? just curious

good luck!

The IR bug is a really clever little device, a plastic circle that is drilled out through the middle with a countersunk angle on the inside of the hole. This angle, all around the circle, helps pick up IR from a much wider angle than the sensor itself can.

It is possible that the remote has a modulating freuqency that the Niles does not pass. Have you called Niles to see if they have had any complaints about that product?

Another thing could actually be too much IR going into the sensor. Try flashing the remote repeatedly, say wiht PAUSE, while pointing it in different directions. If it works when pointed away from the sensor, then too much IR is going into the sensor. That is where the adjustment can help, as you can reduce the IR output. Check the manual for the Niles; it's pretty straightforward and clear.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Any chance it's a perforated screen? The piece might be getting hit with IR twice.

To everyone who responded with advice: thanks for all the help. A turn of the adjustment screw on the repeater did the trick. The 3510A is responding well now. I wish all problems were as easy to resolve. The advice really helped because now I can go ahead and get a Harmony remote (and not an RF unit).

And for MikeTech: the model # on the Niles is IRP-6A (got it about 10 years ago).

Just to add to the general knowledge: did you turn the IR

UP

or

DOWN?

I have seen that lowering the IR sometimes solves problems, and I would just like to see if this is in that camp or if there is some other rare effect I need to think of when I run into a similar problem. Trust me, I will, and I will think of you when I do!

Actually, I moved the trim pot a half-turn counter-clockwise, which was the only direction I could turn it in. According to manual, that means that I reduced the power. So it was at maximum power, like
all the others.
