I am building a new 4000 SF house. What is the best or recommended phase coupler /amplifier. Prices range from $20 for a simple coupler to $200 for a more complex amplifer/coupler.

Is there any reason that the coupler/amp should not be mounted 40 feet from the power distribution cabinet near the structured wiring distribution box?

Thanks for your counsel on this subject.

Okay, I'll bite: what is a phase coupler/amplifier?

Are you talking about an X-10 device? If so, be sure you ask this question in the X-10 forum!

Anybody?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Oh sorry! Smarthome calls their device an "Amplified X10 Coupler Repeater". Leviton also calls theirs an "amplified coupler-repeater for 2-phase (split single phase) electrical systems ".

I figgered you p[rofessionals would understand what I was referring to.

Any suggestions for the best " amplified coupler-repeaters" ?

X-10 is not commonly used in professional applications. You will probobly find more help in the X-10 forum of this website.

Impaqt,
was that a kind way of saying it is not as good as you think it should be?

X-10 is one of those products that some people love, and they work around the idiosyncrasies, and others (myself included, for at least 20 years) avoid because of problems.

X-10 is great for the hobbiest who ias doing his own system.... Whn a switch goes bad... Buy a new one for $10 and slap it in the wall yourself..... If I had X-10 system in the field, I shudder to think of the service calls....

Ernie, do you use any PLC controls? Doesn't any PLC system face the same split phase probleem, unless you feed signals to both (all) phases ?

Impaqt,

Thanks for your input; I'll ask you the same question: "Do you use PLC? What system do you prefer?"

Thanks!

If you're looking at doing PLC based lighting control check out Lightolier. It's not cheap, but their firewall approach is interesting.
