I usually work with Denon but on ocasion have to work with Yamaha. I have found these units not very user friendly and have had trouble getting good bass output from the sub woofer pre out RCA. Is it just me or hasany one else had problems with these units.

No i have always found it the other way round! on ease of use its just what your used to i suppose.I work mainly with Yam recievers with occasional Denon 3803 etc and until you get into the brand mindset it can be difficult.
I personly have found no probs with Yam sub outs .What subs are you using? what speakers are you using are you using the right Small/Large setting?
Sorry answer to the post title YES

I use lots of Yamaha receivers and have always found them to be good performers. Bass has never been an issue.

You have to understand that bassis extremely room and setup dependant. What a denon does on a given room is going to be completely different that what a Yamaha is going to do in a different room. Even with the same sub....

I am using a Sonance recessed sub system. I have tried setting the the front and centre speakers to both large and small. Small should send all bass to the pre out. I have tested the sub amp by plugging it into the record out jack and it comes on auto matically. The weirdest part is even when I go to manual steup and trty to adjust the sub level up, the pre out does'nt seem to be outputting enough to turn on the sub amp. During regular operation the volume has to be turned way up for the amp to kick in and when it does it just doesn't seem to be very loud.

Okay, let's get picky about how this is worded. When you tell the amp that it has small speakers, it does not send the bass to the sub out. Instead, it keeps the bass out of the small speakers.

When you go to the setup menu and tell the Yamaha that there is a subwoofer, THEN you get the bass!

I ran into a weird situation some years ago where the Yams only sent LFE to the sub, so you got no bass on plain old stereo, but I think they have figured out that that was a mistake on their part.

You can also test for bass coming out of the amp by using the speaker output hookup. In fact, if you are running speaker B, you really want to wire it this way so the sub in room A goes off when you run the speakers in room B. As long as the mains can tolerate the bass going to them, this will also work.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I have to admit that I never found the older Yamahas that user friendly and the Denons won every time thanks to the fact that the OSD was very logical.

I have to admit that the later Yamahas are much better both in facilities and user friendliness and the DSP AZ9 and their smaller new Digital amp has one of the coolest OSDs yet seen on any AV amp / Receiver.

I would now be happy speccing a Denon or Yamaha (higher end).

The Model is a RX-v2400 and in the menu the sub is refered to as both LFE/SWFR. All I know is that the unit is not outputting bass as well as I think it should (barely kicking the sub on). I have wired the sub both line level and speaker level. still barely any bass response. although the sub does kick in more when the volume is louder.

Did you run the AUto-calibration?

Are you using the Sonance dual sub system? Have you checked Phase on the subs?

And have you tried a new amp? Perhaps its not the Yamaha...

I would check the sub. I use yamaha's all the time and have no problems with them. As an added plus they have every discrete code in IR format that I could possibly want.

I'll tell you what the problem is. It's that Sonance subs are underperformers, to put it nicely...try to reverse the phase on the subs.

The other problem...Yamaha...was it a free gift with a purchace of a motorcycle or guitar? -JK

One of the wierd things about the Yam rec.s is that the speaker choices are a bit unique.

They ask for large and small like everyone else, but then you have to decide where the bass is supposed to go, that choice that says: MAIN, SUB, BOTH...Make sure that you pick small speakers, and SUB...

It makes me think that the Hi-pass/Low-cut, and the Low-pass/Hi-cut filters don't really tie together the way I thought they should (I'm not claiming to know everything....yet)

Take a stab at it... let me know what happens.

Make sure that the Bass Management setting is in the proper position. On Yamaha units you have a choice of MAIN, SUB, or BOTH. With powered subs and satellite speakers use sub, powered with full range use both, if you leave the Sonance wired up with a high level connection set to main. If using the sub out jack, you can maximize the output by setting the main and center speaker settings to small. My limited experience with the Sonance in-wall subs has been ok but not great. Make sure Sonance amp level is almost all the way up. Also make sure yamaha is set at 0db. If all this checks out, you should be in business.
My opinion - Give me Yamaha over Denon any day!!!
