We have a single component cable ran to a location where a plasma is going to be and now we will need to have an s-video feed also. The customer has built book shelves that were not origanly planned and we cannot run a new wire without cutting into the bookshelves. Is there a less expensive way to convert an s-video to component without using a scaler. I was new when we roughed this job in and have since learned that a single component cable will not suffice. Now I need to fix my mistake as inexpensive as possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What receiver is in the system? Several receivers will upconvert S to component automatically....

Otherwise, Your going into to have to do some kind of scaler..... AVToolbox have several innexpensive video scaler options... My favorite being the AVT-3700

Everything current above the RX-V740 will upconvert to Component level... RX-V1400, RX-2400, Z9 (But not the 3300.... I dont think its still current)

Integra DTR-7.4, 8.4 and 9.1 all upconvert composite and s-video to component. These receivers sound great and have an insane amount of custom features. Highly recommended!

The Kenwood VR-5700 and VR-5900 both with convert anything to component video. Plenty of inputs and ON/OFF/INPUT codes for IR or RS-232.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

We resell the Integra Rcvr line, and I also recommend the DTR6.4 or above. These things upconvert to component video. My personal opinion is they will blow the doors off a similar sony, yamaha, or other off the street brand when it comes to clean power and max options. They also as stated above...have awesome flexibility, On screen display, and programmable remotes. Check into it...

The ONLY cable you have is component? No RG-6 or a CAt-5e?
If it can be wired........

suisidol has finally come up with the most important question: what, no CAT-5? Will you EVER do ANY other installation without running a CAT-5? EVER? EVER?

You probably have thought of this now, but don't EVER run cables to a display without having at least three leads for component and one for video. I usually run a five-conductor, where three are for component and two, with adaptors, are for S. The video is for video. Or I run two three-conductors and do the same thing. If it looks like there is a 2% chance that VGA will ever be needed, I insist on running that, as well. "The walls are open now, and if you decide in three years, or the technology changes, the cost to install this at that time will be prohibitive."

Here's what you do -- get yourself two Xantech CC-12 IR controlled switches, and install RCA jacks on them so that the two poles of their relays switch two hot leads. You are just going to have to put up with the fact that they are not shielded and are not 75 ohm, but dollars to doughnuts this won't matter. Put one at the display and one at the system.

Run the blue and red cable hot leads through the relay. Set up the wiring and the IR control so that when you are on a component source, the Blue and Red wires take Blue and Red to the component input. When you are on an s-video source, the Blue and Red become the two conductors of the S-video.

To do this more cheaply, go to Radio Shack and buy two of their IR-controlled antenna A-B switches. I believe the hot leads are simply switched from A to B with no resistors or other stuff in the way, so you can use this to switch a relay to do your signal switching. The only drawbacks to this are that you will have to do more fabrication and some old Sony DSS remotes would switch this piece, and maybe more recent ones will, too. I don't know.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
