Just had to walk away from a Crestron deal cuz the customer wants to buy his gear off of Ebay. I had a look at the gear he was talking about. It's selling for less than cost for NIB product.....obviously some dealer needs the cash but..WTF?

....End Rant

Email the link to your rep. Crestron has a no internet sales policy for New product.

The last time I spoke to my rep ( a few months ago), he told me that there wasn't a policy in place.

Take the project and charge every penny for programming and install. He saved his money up front and will be willing to pay to have it done right. I absolutely hate this crap to but it really can be a win win for you.

Maybe some honesty would work. 'If you supply the hardware, I must charge more for installation. The sales profit is part of my business plan.'
Then explain your overhead in great detail.

Or, make it a rule - must buy Crestron from you.

Or, sell all hardware at cost, and charge more for design, install, and programming for everyone. I think most clients would actually like this.

Just throwing some ideas out.

BTW, it's not just this industry. Most mom+pop stores have gone out of business because of cheaper prices elsewhere, be it online or Walmart.

I used to work in the printing industry. If a client supplied the materials instead of us, we insisted that it meet our specifications, and then we add the equivalent of our normal markup for the materials onto the price. One could do the same here.

I would call Crestron after finding out who's selling this equipment if it's a real dealer, I would consider letting Crestron know who it is. If it's a private seller and not an authorized (B&M, not e-seller) dealer, tell the client that equipment bought from a private seller won't have a warranty and if it's a real dealer if it is a real dealer, tell him to expect it to be demo equipment because, IMO, not many dealers keep this stuff in stock. Accessories, maybe, but control units and touch screens- not likely.

I saw the same thing happen with some Dynaudio speakers and the manager at Dynaudio knew about them- it was a dealer who was going under and just dumping their inventory.

Wait until firmware starts bricking touchpanels and he has to deal with RMA's. He will wish he spent the extra $50 and bought it from you.

Don't take for granted the other Crestron Dealers in the area feeling the exact same way that you do.  Everyone hates this kind of thing.  Give them a call, get together and come to a gentlemens agreement that nobody will touch this kind of work in your area.

If the guy is buying online, he's certainly too cheap to fly somebody in from 1/2 way across the country to install and program.  You've effectively "locked" him out of the area.  Now he has to buy from one of the Crestron Dealers in the area, and may the best salesman win.

I know it sounds a little crazy, but I did this very thing a few years ago.  It has worked out great for me as well as the other CI's in the area because we've built relationships and help each other out from time to time. It works out nicely. Just because we compete against each other doesn't mean that we can't be on the same team when it comes to protecting out livelihood.

Good luck to you.

Not blaming AVAD....AVAD is their own beast. Yes it is the manufacturers fault. When we see most of these manufacturers send their product to some of these disty's (and AVAD will sell to anyone with a heart beat) and big box stores...we either loose them or the product quality really drops.

One point with AVAD's sales......we install for a wearhouse funiture company who gets all their audio, security, and camera equipment from AVAD. It is for their own companies personal use they do not resale. It is what it is....and we charge for our labor, we don't deal with any warranty's, and everything is a service call for anything we didn't provide.
