Can anyone recommend any music servers that are superior to Escient? What I really want to do is incorporate a music server into a whole house audio system and have an iPronto as the display for control instead of having it up on the display screen.

MAX by AMX, Request, Imerge, Arakis

All Technically superior to the Escient, but I find most client like the feel of the Escient better.

As for the iPronto interface.......... Good luck on that... Havent seen any of those manufacturers go that route. You will probobly need to step up and go the AMX or Crestron route if you want real feedback to a wireless panel. Theres just no way to acurately parse the information with the iPronto.

Thank you Impaqt for the feedback...I couldn't find any information on the Arakis...do you have a link for that?

This client has no automation currently in his home and we are hoping to give him some control via the various prontos.

I would like to do his whole house but it's a little late.

It works well, but there's too many things about it I dislike.

The Video Request is just a rs232 control box that will control upto 4 SONY DVD changers - providing the enduser the same kind of interface as seen with there ARQ's.

(referring to the Arakkis DC6)
Specifically, no video ouput or front-panel display & mp2 ripping only.

A control system is required to do anything with it. So if you have your program loaded up, all connections are made, you press play & nothing happens, the possible troubleshooting variables are way too numerous. Without a front-panel display or video output, you have no idea where the problem lies. At least with ReQuest & Escient you can get the unit playing first before testing your Crestron/AMX program.

I believe you can transfer your own mp3's into it over USB - I tried once, and connecting the cable immediately fried the unit. And the mp2 ripping is really slow.

In their defense, when they work, they work very well. 6 discrete audio outputs in one chassis is pretty sweet.

All servers have their good & bad points. We're about to try our first FireBall since onboard ethernet was added in the next couple weeks, so I'll be able to make an educated evaluation then. That whole HPNA thing really annoyed me, but I'm giving them a second chance.
