Dish network makes a HD Satellite receiver with TIVO built into it. Does DirectTV have one or any other manufacture that makes sat receivers for DirectTV?

Audio...

It's actually not a TIVO, just a DVR. It's doesn't have all the cool bells and whistles that the TiVO and RePlay have, like advanced program guides, ethernet, etc.....although it doesn't cost you $300.00 for a subscription either...

To the best of my knowledge, there are no other HDTV ready DVR's on the market except for the Dish 921.

HOWEVER, I will be experimenting with a Windows XP Media Center loaded PC that may offer some hope!

The Hughes HD-DVR250 is scheduled for release in April. 2 HD DirecTV tuners, 2 ATSC tuners, 250GB hard drive. Supposed to retail for $999.

There's a forum devoted to it at TivoCommunity.com :

Thanks for the information deb. I had seen one in a magazine but there was no part number for it.

Avdude, I'm curious to find out how the windows XP Media Center turns out. I think I have a client that needs something like that.

Thanks for the help.

I think that DISH Network has one upped DirectTV...their new 921 can record 25 hours of HD...it has an off air HD tuner...they are cheaper for the customer than DirectTV...the residuals are greater for dealers...and on the installation side you only have to aim at 2 sat's vs. 3 with DirectTV. Any thoughts?

It all depends what you're comfortable with. I've personally been a DirecTV customer since the SAT-A1 came out, and my expanded SAT-T60 is my favorite box ever. I doubt anything DISH or Cable could offer would convince me to switch.

All these digital television options each carry a significant learning curve, so if your customer is familiar with one, it's in everone's best interest for them to stay with it. Just keep them updated with it's latest features.

How about more bandwidth for their HD Video than Direct TV?

Is this an ad for Dish?

More HD bandwidth is probably true, except that both companies are inferior to cable providers in this regard. And both need to seriously up their HD capability, which won't be easy.

The HD Tivo will be better than the 921. The 921 is already available, so they've one-upped D* on timing. But that's about it.

JBJ...

You are right...

Echosphere...dba echostar..dba Dish...LEASES time, space, satellites and transponders TO DirecTv..

They (dish) have allocated MORE space for their product than for DirecTV....

ALTHOUGH...

I am currently working for the guy that helped bring about voom, www.voom.com , and helped facilitate the buyout of DriecTv by Cablevision/Newscorp/Murdoch...and HE tells me that drastic changes (including satellite shifts) ARE in the works to REMOVE DirecTV programming and Services FROM Echsospehre (EchoStar, DISH), and garner the same bandwith and service as VOOM...

for those of you who haven't looked into voom yet..here's the link [Link: voom.com]

and SPIKY...maybe your statements above are true in YOUR world (Minneapolis, MN)...but in MANY areas of the country...they are about as far from the truth as you can get!!!

Comcast JUST began HDTV service in Denver (population about 3 Million within a 65 mile radius) one month ago...prior to that..it was Satellite and ATSC...

and oneupmanship is EVERYTHING in this industry...so...dish wins...EVERYONE else is second place!

no ir'a NOT an add for dish, it wash a simple question~ but I can tell you that of all the Satellite and HDTV technology at CES (were you there?) that DISH, and their PVR 921, was stealing the HDTV show!!

One last thing, for those who question...we are DirecTv installers, so NOT "advertising" dish . But, I happen to know (QUITE WELL) many people at Echostar (I've done their homes, since I'm 8 miles from their Corporate HQ,) and often get the inside skinny...

my 2C...to debunk some mis-information

Value electronics in Scarsdale, NY. DirecTV has taken over allhardware sales and the unit is now called HD-10DVR250 or something like that.

Zenith was selling an OTA DVR (non-Tivo): HDR230, with an 80 MB hard drive. Its still available at Amazon. The Zenith brand is apparently being discontinued by its owner LG. LG has an OTA plus unscrambled analog digital cable STB DVR: LST-3410A,
with an 120 MB hard drive.

The 3410 is not a directv tuner, just a HD DVR for cable (unscrambled) and terrestrial tunning.
