If anyone has a RX-A700 sending HDMI over Cat5e, can you try and recreate an issue for me?

Input a signal to the Component input send an audio source into one of the Analog inputs with the AVR in 7channel and crank it up. If you have the same issue you should see some distortion on screen. As you turn up the volume eventually the Video signal should drop out until you turn it back down.

I have tried Gefen and Ethereal baluns both have the same issue. I have done some other testing that leads me to think its either JUST this AVR or its a problem with this model/line in general.

sounds like you're pulling to much power into the receiver (or pulling to much from the power supplies) causing the balun (or HDMI signal) to not have sufficient voltage...just a guess.

what kind of power conditioning are you using, how loud/db level are you turning the receiver up to, and how long is the balun run? Are the baluns eq'd properly for the distance?

I plugged the AVR into separate circuit. The run is only 40ft or so.

It only happens on my 1 Component source (URC PSX2). The Blu ray, and 2 Moto boxes via HDMI have no issues no matter the volume or program.

I plugged my test pattern generator to comp 1 and plugged my iPhone straight into the corresponding analog and still had the issue.

I've been thinking about this.

The Blu-ray and other HDMI signals do not have a problem, so the problem is not in the baluns.

Check for this happening with the baluns only a couple of feet of wire from one another. Also check for this just using an HDMI cable. From what you describe, I'd expect you to have the problem no matter what, meaning the issue is indeed inside the receiver. This testing can't differentiate between a unit issue and a model issue, though.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Stupid question did you did the firmware update for the receiver? Even the newer units don't seem to be shipping with updated frimware. I ran into some issues with the component video & HDMI signals syncing before I did the update on two units. But neither of those involved baluns. To run the firmware update you have to burn the image to a CD-R & hook up a cd player to the unit (works with some DVD's players depending on the DACs)

Do your baluns have a power supply on one or both ends, or are they using the receiver for power supply?

We have had the same problem. We found the issue to be the yamaha. We fixed it with upconverting the Compenent to HDMI prior to the receiver. This kind of stuff is why I have lost so much respecty for Yamaha over the last couple of years. Not the quality in the product there used to be.

My manual states specifically that using an optical player such as a CD or DVD the update must be done over a pure digital connection. Just a little lower they add that the HDMI connection will NOT work. You component must connect through either the optical or coax digital interface.

Once you understand all that and are ready to proceed, copy the firmware to a usb flash drive and follow the 6 simple steps to update the firmware.

If he's still trying to update his firmware, then he's a much more patient person than I am
