James I think you’re mixing up things .Information overload!
What I think you are trying to do is teach an MX800 a discrete commands you can do this in a number of ways

Some universal remotes (radio shack) have been cleverly hacked by very smart guys and can be programmed by a PC via a special cable and interface called JP1. When you have the right set up you can send discrete codes (if they exist not all items have discretes) and macros.
See here
[Link: hifi-remote.com]

I think the idea you have is to find these discrete codes and then teach them to your MX800

I live in the UK and have never physically seen a MX 800.I have never programmed a MX800 but in the interest of trying to help you James this is what I have tried.

I downloaded the software you have (I have seen your post on the home theater master forum saying it doesn’t work!). Now on the files section of the HTM remotes there aren’t many files (people don’t seem to want to load there work up) none for zenith plasma but there are loads of files to work devices/discrete codes on the pronto section see here

And here
[Link: remotecentral.com]
Which you can download.

Now I am guessing here so I might be way off but when you open the MX800 software MX editor it has a section called universal browser. You can load up pronto CCF files in this box if you drag and drop the button you want onto the button on the picture of the MX800 remote it come up with a blue tag with L I guess that means it learned it. Now I guess that this works as I have said I have never programmed a MX800 but if this is the case it seems quite straight forward.

Now on the discrete section of the pronto files it just shows the actual Hex code.
If you download the software to work a Pronto see here

You can then insert this code onto a button and create a pronto CCF this then could be exported to the MX800 software.

If I am wrong please tell us guys

Hope this helps wolf

Ernie,
forget theory, when you qouted me I was trying sacarasm. 'cept it sounds better than it reads. But one thing I am curious about is why you think A/V installers have bad reps? Home owners deal with plumbers, electricians, carpenters, GC's... Those guys have bad reps because they deal with them more frequently than A/V guys. How many homeowners sit around with there friends and say, "man, I have to call an A/V specialist again so that they can build my third theater in the house. But I hate those guys. Julie, which A/V company do you use?"
BTW I am being partly sarcastic, but I would like to know if there is a problem out there I'm not aware of.

Peace

I am in the wrong state. That is some nice cash flow to buy a decent house in Santa Barbara.

I understand
that rs 232 is a protocol and does not stand
for radio shack.

James, RS232 is not a protocol, it's an communication interface specification. Some of the protocols that you can run over a RS232 interface are BSC, SNA, SDLC, X.25, TCP ...etc. Yes, I'm showing my age.

Cheers
