Does anyone know what's inside a DVI cable? Or where to get it bulk on a roll?

I've got 2 projects where existing customers are replacing their old CRTs with new DLPs. I'd love to connect them with DVI, and I could fish a new line to both but not with the giant end on it. There's already RGBHV lines in place but after looking at a pinout I doubt it could be adapted.

Any info appreciated.

Try Pacific cable. They had some diagrams illustrating the connectors and different flavors of DVI

Doug,

check your e-mail, I sent you a pinout sheet.

Anyone else who might need it, let me know!

Here's a pretty comprehensive link of various pinouts for the tech/av industry

Thanks guys.

Pacific Cable was a goldmine... they have a photopage of how they make the cables, and one page shows a cross-section of the cable. Pretty cool.

Why not just go with a Dwin TV-3? Great projector with a seperate processor. Their DVI hookup to the projector is only 3/4 in diamater. They make it available up to 50 ft.

A lot of time & pain went into choosing the right projectors for these jobs, I'm not about to reconsider them.

As for soldering, I can do it but I don't dig it... especially away from my bench.

Who knows, we may just keep the RGBHV hookups... but it's an opportunity to venture into the unknown. Either way, I know a lot more now than I did this morning. I don't like blind hookups, I like to know what I'm sending, and this thread cleared a lot of that up.

Thanks all,

Another option is to convert the DVI to fiber optic and then back again at the projector. This means pulling a much smaller cable. Of course you will add cost for the converters. Check out http://www.gefen.com for the parts.
