I am doing a whole house audio system with 5 or 6 zones. I am deciding between using something like the Xantech ZPR68-10 and their 12 channel amp or using their connecting block with separate receivers. Either way, I would use their SmartPad3 keypads. It seems to me that the receiver method is less expensive and it is easier to replace 1 component if it goes out rather than a $1400 piece that will bring down the whole system. I know the block will take a lot less space and let me do Global commands which would get complicated with the IR connecting block. Also, how do you do surroudn sound with one of those integrated system??? They have 2 channels (plus video) for each zone only. Is that completely outside of the system (other than getting IR from the system)?

Use the Xantech system. You cant go wrong with their system. For surround sound you can use a video input on a surround receiver and control the volume of the receiver for that zone. You probally dont even need a smartpad for that zone. Use a pronto or other programable remote. I have been their both ways. The sound is unbelievable, and it also elimimates alot of clutter.

Would I need the Gatekeeper IR module to keep track of the state with the ZPR68 and the PA1235? As I understand it, the SmartPad 3 has intelligent power management built in and will not send an on/off command if not needed. However, I am not sure how the line from the switched power supply for each source and the status from the ZPR68 would be hooked up.

You don't have to stick w/ the ZPR, even if you use the Xantech keypads. For six zones, I like the Sonance Harbor better myself. Its a better sounding product, aand I think that you will find it easier to install as well. As for the Gatekeeper, you don't need it for those two products, you might for your sources.
