Firmware updates on ANYTHING scare the crap out of me lately. I don't understand why manufacturers don't do a dual firmware setup - something of a fail-safe for problems like this.

Example: Control4 dimmers have 2 copies of the firmware in them. One goes bad and you can hit a "secret" button sequence and swap to the backup (and identical) firmware. In their case the newest firmware is too large to keep 2 copies in the tiny amount of memory, but you can still get reduced functionality out of the backup firmware.

Although I generally like Denon, I recently installed an AVR1911 only to find that it has no component video output, only HDMI. Shame on me for not checking the spec's, but c'mon! No component video output?? What's you're backup plan when HDMI doesn't work with an older display, or some other hellish HDMI issue surfaces?

I think the reason for the MAC address request is so they can look at their server and see that MAC address X attempted update and then try to determine what failed. The serial number information may not be available at that point and it may only report the MAC address of that specific device.

Bingo! S# is also shown when we check the update history of the MAC.

Could I recommend a 2311ci?

Yes of course and I don't mean to be a whiner - if the product doesn't fit the situation, don't buy it.

I'm just saying if I have a need for a low-end receiver, there are many situations where I would steer clear of a receiver with no component out. - Does it matter to Denon sales? Well, probably not, but sometimes we come here to vent. The fact is, I was stupid enough to assume the 1911 had component out as every receiver the last 7 years has - I drove an hour and half to replace a defective receiver in a situation where the TV was fed by component video only on a lift on the other side of the room. That sucked!

Ernie,

His name is MATT and what he emphasizes in training is to do a processor reset first thing not a firmware update....

Anyway, I've not had any problems with Denon other than this resent firmware issue and Matt and the other Tech staff (by the way Matt is a training guy - not tech support - so the fact that he even cares to give input is great.) have been great in working with me/us to resolve.

I'm fine these issues provided I have support on my side - and it's not recurring....

Now, RTI on the other hand.....!

HA ! Good one.

Hope we can resolve this without replacement Net Cards. Getting old and expensive. Keep us posted Matt. I have not seen any info on the Ci site as yet.

Ah. Senior moment. Shoulda done a processor reset first.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Don't do that Ernie, at your age you'd probably brick.

I use Denon exclusively! Other than some higher end jobs with seperates we dont use anything else period. Rock solid, In ten years we have had one bad unit (3805 for my mother and stepfather!!!!!). Not to say there has never been a case of i wish they did this or that. overall they are great. the new 11 series is tough to beat for the money!
I love supporting product that supports me!

Chris,

Allow me to begin with the 3311CI's have been working very well with updates in the field, I personally have one and can vouch for it. This doesn't change the fact that some people are having issues. What is causing the issue is to be determined.

Could you please provide the Mac address for each of the AVR's in question. This is located on the rear of the AVR and is also located in the Network info area.

Please PM or email me the information.

I do understand the frustration with this, but I can't assist any further without some support from our CIs. So, to the others with the same issue. Please forward me the same information so the issue can be investigated and addressed.

Thank you in advance.

To date I have heard from two CI's offering the information as requested.

There is a way to force the AVR not to update if the update fails. This may be done by pressing and holding arrow up and down on the front panel and then power cycleing the AVR off and then on. I would also recommend turning off the update and upgrade notification until the issue on your units is investigated.

Ok. Back to my day job.

once the system is installed, do you suggest turning off the auto update feature? I guess if we change something is the system, at that time we could do an update???

Thankfully there isn't an auto update, there is an Update and an Upgrade notification. I always turn them off.

Manual setup>>>Network setup>>>Other>>>Update Notification>Off
