Im looking for a "remote control" (or some other hardware) that will enable me to select, play, stop (etc...) mp3's on my MP3server. (Windows XP)

The MP3 server is also on a network (wireless and thin ethernet)

Im not sure this is possible, or you there might not be products like this, but I would like your thoughts on it.

If there are any other solution people know of I would be very grateful.

Look forward to speaking to you.

Regards,

Oliver Cookson

Probably more than you need, but I've been following these products with interest:

This market segment (home audio MP3 stream receivers) is just beginning to explode with new products, so I'm sure there are similar devices that I've left out.

Another option is the CD3O. I haven't had any experience with these yet, but I'm very interested in trying one out.

Wow thanks for the responses guys. I have been researching the various players and the following two have caught my eye most:

C300 (WiFi) www.cd3o.com
Squeezebox (WiFi) www.slimdevices.com

Has anyone had experience using the above products? Any good\bad comments? The c300 is cheaper but doesn't have the LCD display. The voice recognition on the c300 does sound good, but is it useful?

Any other comments would be great.

Thanks Oliver :)

I have personally set up 2 devices (music clients/servers) in my house. I use a Gateway network DVD player (client) which allows me to play music (MP3s or WMAs-a superior musical format if you deselect the copy protection issues), video, or photos. You can use wired or wireless, but there are some wireless problems with bandwidth for streaming video. To overcome a lack of Cat-5 wiring, I used Powerline to run 14 MB/sec thru the AC lines of my house, but you can't have shared power (i.e. a condo or a apt complex). The Gateway has a great interface via a TV to choose music by genre, artist, album, or playlist and is very easy to set up. I also bought a Audiotron so I can control music via the internet, as the Audiotron's server is internet based via an IP address in your house. I did this so from my office (which has no TV but obviously the computer), I can choose the music that I want that is then piped into the amplifier (2 floors away) and then comes back up to in wall speakers in the office. If you were to buy one, I like the Gateway because of the TV interface and video (Audiotron has no video). However, the audiotron can be controlled by a laptop, desktop, or even theoretically an ipronto or other wireless internet device. The Gateway Server and Audiotron server run on my computer and I just bought a huge hard drive to accomodate thousands of songs. BTW, WMA has superior musical characteristics at a given sampling rate, but you must be careful when converting to WMA, or else you won't be able to play it on another device. Make sure you uncheck the "protect" the music box as you will never be able to play it on another portable player or another computer (if you upgrade computers, for example) if it is "protected".
