Where would one go for training, etc, in this field? I am a Satellite retailer/installer. I have a lot of experience with electronics, Audio/video, etc. i just want to get more involved in the high end systems. Whole home distribution, Home automation, pre-wiring, CCTV, etc. where would i start? ADI is one of my suppliers, and I think they offer classes every once in a while, but Im looking for other avenues as well.

No, I wont install your plasma with an orange extension cord hanging down the wall.

I do audio/video system design and installation as well as remote control programming.

One approach is to obtain CEDIA training. I have not done this mostly because of the cost and actual work time I will lose, and you will also have to weigh that against what you are making.

That said, since you do satellite installations, you have part of the skills that are needed to do this work, mainly that you have an understanding of how to get signals from one place to another, and you have a decent concept of how buildings are put together. Little things like knowing never to consider putting an inwall speaker above a door, even if it will almost always be closed, because there will likely be too much wood above the door, is an example of how this is valuable.

I would approach an installation company and tell them what you can do, what you want to learn, and ask them if they have need for you on a part-time or full-time basis. If you look at other threads here, for instance "a/v helper" from today or yesterday, you will see that installation companies are leery of training their competition. You have to think through what your position is on this, and be honest about it.

If a company says that they really don't need that much satellite installation, tell them that you know how to get signals from one place to another and you could definitely do prewire work. This is a great place to get started in understanding the structure of systems, and labor is needed in this area. It is often not highly regarded work, as it is hard and not too rewarding. I have heard the term "wire monkey" for prewire guy, and that shows some of the attitude out there. But this would give you some paid work, let you see more of the systems than you can as an installer, and work as an entree into working for a company that will have more needs...and sooner or later they will ask you to assist, or learn, and you will be on your way.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Also, since ADI is a local distributor, ask them to let you "practice" in their training rooms with the stuff they already have out. I did this when I first started. They had a Denon rec./and dvd player and I think a vcr, but anyway, I took a demo Pronto in there and just sort of figured it out. They also let me fool around with a couple of keypads. It wasn't much automation but it was enough to get me started. Good Luck!
Ps- try and go to CEDIA boot camp, this will help out, if you can spare the time and funds.

I've been twice to CEDIA and there is no way I'll miss it anymore no matter how much money I loose for that week because I gain the other 51 weeks of the year!
