i use avg and norton and mcaffee they all seem about the same
Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"...

i use avg free on my personal computers.   for the work laptop, my IT department uses Symantec Endpoint Protection.   Both are very transparent and I hardly know they are there.

I use avast's free version. It seems to do a better job than norton without all the norton issues( resource hog, slow, constant approvals, and disallowing access to programs and files)

I got some weird browser (firefox) infection yesterday. Did a free online scan and it found some trojans. Ran malwarebytes then spybot and today i noticed the problem again.

When i use google to search.. any link goes to a random website. So today i ran a different online virus scan and no problems reported.. i ran malwarebytes and spybot and spybot found some tracking cookies but nothing else. The problem is gone again but im tired of dealing with it so i guess i have to install antivirus software. Its been over 2 years that i haven't had any installed because it always slows my PC down.

I created a list of running processes to try and figure out which one is the infection so i could search for a removal tool or instructions but since the searches are all bogus i cant really do it. PITA.

Ever listen to Leo Laporte? There used to be a tv show called The Screensavers on Tech Tv that was hosted by him , but now he has a podcast network that gets me through my driving back and forth to jobs . The shows I like are Home Theater Geeks and The Tech Guy. They are on the iTunes store for free and I learn something new almost every day from them.I highly recommend checking it out , I am sure it would appeal to every self proclaimed geek on this site. He swears by NOD32 antivirus. It is supposedly lighter weight and uses some sort or "advanced heuristic" that identifies virus like activity in files before they are tagged as virus's (viri - LOL). Personally I do not use any antivirus though.

I used NOD32 the last time i had antivirus and it was super lightweight. I keep windows updated and stay away from sites that are not well known and browse with firefox, i dont use a mail client because i check it all online etc. My guess is that i picked up the virus following an image link via google images but i really don't know. Its possible i picked it up from someone i know sending me a file but i cant recall that happening recently.

The reason i am even thinking about antivirus software is because its so freaking annoying to go to google and click a link and end up at houseofpoo.com or seflishboy.net. driving me nuts :). Im not joking about those domains.. i am ending up there. Wtf right?

Bing seems to be fine but yahoo is also doing the same thing. Based on where i end up it looks like some stupid businesses decided to pay some idiot for website hits. So the spammer/malware guy infects a bunch of computers and they all redirect to their clients websites. Then their dumbass clients read their stats and think this awesome marketing campaign is working.

It happens with firefox or chromium/chrome.

Hands down for ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus 4 is THE best. The old NOD32 sucked big time, but the new version is amazing. I can understand why you go rid of it. But with the new one you don't realize it is even on your system. Light weight, doesn't bug you, and doesn't make start up time slow. It deletes known viruses without telling you or bugging you. If it suspects something is a virus it quarantines it until you take a look and choose if you would like to delete it or not. It also warnes you about fake links and sites like the ones listed above :D

After some painful attempts at researching this issue i found something called the "google redirect virus" :). Im guessing thats what i got. Im doing an eset scan right now. If i were home i would use another PC to find the removeal instructions/tools for it. I can wait until i get home on wednesday.

I use and recommend Avast free. It self updates, self maintains. I only notice it when I click a bad link on the net or some email attachment. Very good on resources, way better than AVG was.

AVG, and Avast are very good and free. Avast has an option to do a boot scan, which scans before most viruses can load up. Another light weight one is Microsoft
Security Essentials. Try using Hitman Pro to remove the google redirect.

Exactly why i use a mac and use boot camp or parallels for windows.
I do all interrnet related work on mac side ,and all programming on pc side.

Never had s virus on my mac or pc partition.
I don't use any virus software on either side.

I use SUPERAntiSpyware to really get rid and monitor for trojans and maleware. I used the free version only for a long time, but recently but the full version for very cheap.

Other than that, I've used McAfee for probably 8 years now and never had any real issues. The one time I got some malware bug, I was told about SuperAntiSpyware and it was handled.

I've worked on and my wife and family have had computers with Norton and it seemed to always be nothing but trouble.
do wino hue?
