Why DVI? Seems like a real pain to terminate the connectors. Not to mention the difficulty with switching a multi pin digital signal. Why not use a digital standard like smpte 292m that would use x1 coax between source and monitor connection and it was designed for HDTV?

Because Hollywood lawyers get to make these decisions. And they'll sue anyone who tries to release a piece of equipment with a recordable digital video output on it.

So I am right, there is no good reason for DVI except to make monster cable etc piles of money.

OK... I'm a big advocate of Cables, But with DVI I see no reason to spend the big bucks on Monster Cable brand or anything else ultra expensive...... Key Digital sells Resonably priced DVI Cables up to 100' I think... Its a pure digital transfer......

As for switching... All the big boys are building DVI switchers now.... And if the Client doesnt want to spend the money on the switcher... USe HD Componant conections...... No ones forcing anyone to use DVI.

DVI Does look better with the right equipment and is well worth it, if the customer has the cash, the stuff at www.dvigear.com works great and is not over priced.

I sure wish KEY Digital would make a 40' DVI-D. The only reasonable one I could find is the monster 400 series.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

Aside from our perennial favorite, Sluggo, just who are the big boys these days?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

is there a foot limit with DVI ?? my brain would say no but , I have sold some pioneer plamsas and pioneer has told me it has about a 40-45 foot distance range between the plamsa and the media box and not to use a longer cable ... is the right or a bunch of BS ?
ever used that 100' cable ?

Pacific Cable and BTX both have models I've used for Switching DVI.....

I've heard 10 Meters is the limit on DVI.... However.. Runco Claimed they were using 100footers at CEDIA and their projos all looked fantastic....

Key DIdgital will actually provide up to a 50' DVI cable now... Not 100'............

BTX has 65'ers and aso sells "repeaters" for up to 375' ANd Fiber Optic adapters to go up to 1640 feet.

DVI Gear Makes an HDCP Compliant repeater amplifier that will net you over 50 foot distances. Further their DVI cables are really beefy, I like their 10 meter cables better than the other manufactures I have tried, better price to!

What happens to the picture when you use more than 10 meters? Has anyone ever experienced the picture degradation caused by DVI cables being too long? Is the DVI used for plasma televisions the same DVI standard used for computer monitors? Is it really that much better than component, RGB or VGA? I know there are numerous variations of DVI. What should we look for when buying cables-- which standard?

Sorry, lots of questions. I hope to see lots of answers. Thanks for helping those of us that have trepidatiously ventured into this new method of signal transfer. I have heard a lot of BS over the years in this industry(Monster Cable, Bose. etc.)and I don't know how much of it really has validity. I'd love to hear your opinions about DVI.

There are fiber DVI converters that'll run a kilometer or so. Distance is definatly Not a problem with fiberoptic DVI.
