Has anyone ever automated or motorized a pocket door? I have a client with a potential "pocket door" entry to their theater. I would like to motorize this door, just to add to the "wow factor". The door opening is 42" wide and I have full access to install a pocket door frame. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help........Terry

Most doors I have seen that work in that fashion are on retail stores. I would go to my local big box retailer and check the door for ID tags

Coolness factor aside, if you intend to acoustically isolate the theater from the rest of the home (and I would think that's always desireable) the LAST thing you want to use is a pocket door.

I think the WOW factor would be worth the effort. You could use two doors creating an airlock for acoustic and light isolation.

This sounds like a cool idea..I have not heard of motirized, but for sound a sliding glass door does stop a lot of sound transmission..Maybe that style with something solid core instead of glass..But the seal is basically the same and much better than even a standard door.. or solid core door..If some one knows a way to automate it that would be cool.. Very star trek..

Keep in mind that laws will require you to install safety switches and/or sensors so someone can't get hurt if it malfunctions.

Terry,

Try Makita...they make all kinds of motorized stuff for windows and doors...

Also, you may want to keep in mind that sound isolation and vibration damping MAY become a large factor...

I used to sell fancy motorhomes, I saw a few with air powered sliders, just like star trek! Check the motor coach supply houses?

ALL of these result from a google and/or copernic search of "motorized sliding doors"

there are also NUMEROUS correctional companies that offer products along this line

Many thanks for your thoughts and ideas. The entire theater interior will be acoustic paneled. This will help the acoustic issues related to a pocket door hollow wall. The security and safety issues I had not thought about, thanks. I will pursue all of the links provided. When this project is completed, I will provide some details on how things went.

Thanks again for all your help.....Terry
