We've got a client that we're doing a larger A/V project for and they've asked if we can fix or replace the old NuTone intercom/doorbell system in their home....

I know Channel Vision makes one, but I don't have much experience in a dedicated system as most of our clients use their PBX system for house intercom/door.

Any suggestions??

Do what you know best. In this case, I'd guess you can handle intercom feature built in phone system.

They're not doing a phone sytem... They don't like the "sound" of the Pani in their other home so...

This is why I'm looking for a dedicated...

Does this have to look like or fit into the old Nutone system? If not, Russound makes a great intercom system called Compoint. They have doorbells with video and they also have options to get the intercom units with a screen to directly page different rooms. Take a look, I don't know what the price range is, but I have used this with great results. 12 Zone system and it was bullet proof.

What sytem would you recomend to replace the NuTone.

As I've written, they may go with a Niles ZR-6 (can it tie in?).  No PBX.

How does it work front door entry and zone paging, etc.?

What model Nutone are you replaceing and what new features if any are being requested? Do you just need a new intercom that fits the space, looks better and has an aux audio input?

WhiteVan,

I don't know to the first sentance and Hell yes to the second.

I just received an email from our client responding to our larger bid asking if we can replace the NuTone, so I'm a bit in the blind on this.

We're running Cat5 all over so if I can help to put in some intercom/front door business I'm all for it.

The Nutone IMA3303 and IMA4406 will be replacement depending on what is currently there. They both have aux audio inputs and in my opinion the Nutone intercoms sound good. I can't say they couldn't look better but that seems to be the trend with intercoms. Your other benefit to sticking with the Nutone is not having to wall patch.

Did NuTone ever make an intercom system that didnt crap out after a few years? I have seen several in homes over the years and none were still working. My favorite is the one in my grandmother's house that was built in 1965. The units are huge. It also included a radio tuner (dont know if it had FM), a turn table, and a reel to reel. The turn table and real to reel units fold down out of the wall.
Civil War reenactment is LARPing for people with no imagination.

Or do a DigiLinX system and get the world's best sounding intercom built into the audio distribution (all the touchpanels and keypads have microphones built in already). And you can easily configure in a zone groups, DND, privacy etc...

I've worked with just about every intercom out there.
Of all the Nutone intercoms I've torn out and replaced it's always to bring them up to date and never because the unit is bad. I can not say anything bad about them other than they are ugly but that goes for 99% of intercoms made.
The linearcorp link to the M&S intercom is not a good solution for this job. It gains nothing over the Nutone units and will require drywall repair for fit. The features are the same.
The other issue at hand is wiring. I'm betting the existing system is a 3 wire with a sheilded door cable. It would be wise to re-use that wire. Cat5 is not widely accepted by most intercom makers. The exception to this is OnQ Legrand. Their intercoms run on cat5 and look good but would require a lot of holes to be filled.

WhiteVan - I was just about to repost about the OnQ that I was reading about in my Av*D catalog when sure enough you brought it up...

The home is in full remodel tear-down so I think patching will be ok.  I'm 95% sure they're going to go with a Niles ZR-6 that can tie into the OnQ I believe...

Has anybody workied with the OnQ Legrand???

If the home is in full remodel then the OnQ is idea. I would look at their unity packages and throw in a door station with camera. With the unity you can do single source or multiple sources from the ZR6 as well as pull music from their computer. The plus side is that it looks good. If the house doesn't fit an existing Unity package then you can customize it any way you desire.
