I am looking into doing more XM and SIRIUS stuff both in residential and commercial. But there is a catch, they spec in what antenna to use, thats fine exept nobody specs wire. I know it is Rg-58, but the antenna is connected to a leader already. They sell pre made "extension" cables but who wants to buy what they can make? I know it will be alot simpler to pre-wire a home or office for XM with bulk cable from the van. And then there is the cable length issue. Anyone here have experience with all of this?

The home/Car receivers are a little different than the home/commercial receivers, but adapters are available. If you are going to do the home/commercial receivers, The end connectors for the wire are SMA male. These are available in a crimp or solder type. You may also use an N connector and then an adapter to SMA. I try not to use rg-58 coax. This has a greater loss than say belden 9913. Look at some 50 ohm coax with the lowest loss in upper UHF band.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

They are not just "Extension" cables, they have imbeded Amplification... WHich is critical on long antenna runs.... So unless your going to build your own amplifier as well, youshould use the extensions.... All the passive 15+ft antenna extensions have been pulled from the market.....

We have installed a couple of the sirius systems in offices and homes. We have been making our own extension cables using RG-6Q with runs as long as 75 feet so far and han no problems. Maybe just a fluke though. Terk has a nex XM/Sirius antenna out designed to mount on a satellite pole or something similar now. Has anyone used it?

Thanks

i have a question about XM reception... I have a customer in a high-rise condo who will probably be askin me about satellite radio soon... Since his building blocks broadcast tv signal, even though you can see the antennas from his balcony, will the satellite radio also be blocked? He has southern exposure, on the 20th floor of a 28 floor building...

Thanks in advance
We can do it my way, or we can do it my way while I yell. The choice is yours.

Hey guys,

Hope everbody had a great turkey day. I'll find the info on the connections we used to make the RG6 work when I get back into the office Monday.
I know for a fact we have done this once with an XM system and once with a Sirius system and it seemed to work just fine each time it was done.
