Hello All,

I am wondering if it is possible to connect a PC to a Sony 70" XBR Grand WEGA KDF-70XBR950 using the built in DVI-HDTV Interface and use the TV as a computer monitor and a television.

I have been told by Sony that they don't recommend using any of their TVs as computer monitors and that the DVI-HDTV Interface only works for HD connectivity and not to a PC. Is this true?

If it is true and the DVI connection wont work, I have been told that I can do a S-video conversion connection from a PC to the Sony TV but will lose picture quality when used as a computer monitor. My question with the S-video connection is how bad is bad? will the picture quality be so poor that I won't be able to read text on the screen?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

DVI *will* work on that set, but I haven't spent enough time doing it to actually *get* it to work on my KF-60XBR800. I had a problem with some video drivers and went from 1024x768p and 1920x1080p sort of working (flickery) while on the way to 1280x720p, and I did something that resulted in *no* XP image via DVI no matter what I did (bootup worked fine).

I ended up resorting to using the HDTV component output on my video card (an ATI All In Wonder) to run at 1280x720p. Looked great.

Think of S-Video as DVD resolution. Text will be readable, but you'll really need to stick to an 800x600 desktop resolution (1024x768 will work on some cards, but is a bit blurry). Also note that it'll be 4:3, not widescreen like HDTV.

Use DVI with the powerstrip program. Do a search at www.avsforum.com for more information.

Daniel,

Is there any over or underscan with the component?
Also, which All In Wonder card did you use? Is there a card that has both a dvi output and component?

Thanks much,

I'm using an ATi 9500 with a component video converter to my HDTV. It does show quite a bit of overscan, but it can be corrected. Most of the ATi's newer video cards have a VGA and DVI output. You can buy an adapter that changes the DVI to component video, and another adapter that changes the VGA to DVI.

Odd how Sony is sticking their heads in the sand over this. MANY people (at least at AV forums) are doing it or want to. I plan on running my KF60WE610 on my ATI 9500, either by DVI or component with the adapter, when it gets here. This should be a selling point! The best large screen monitor w/o fear of burn-in!

FYI, though the TV is nice for movies and games, it does not have the same resolution as a computer monitor.
