2nd Rick,

We use TEF so it is easy to do. Next time I build a set of speakers (hobby) I could easily do it as well. I do have some drivers kicking around here that are new which I can measure and break in.

I am sorry but I must be going blind because I can't find that statement anywhere.

I am looking for something this plain and simple as stated in Revel brochure (a company whose factory I have visited): [Link: revelspeakers.com]

"The three high order, steep slope crossovers are physically separated to prevent mutual interference, and each C52 is individually hand-tuned to within a fraction of a decibel to match the production reference standard."

Here is another reference for their M22 in their manual: [Link: revelspeakers.com]

"Each M22 is individually hand-tuned during manufacturing to match the production reference standard within a fraction of a decibel, ensuring incomparable loud speaker-to-loudspeaker consistency."

Anyway, didn't mean to beat this point to death. :) Happy to move on....

Totem tests everyone of the speakers before it leaves the factory. They test every single component that goes into making that speaker before it's installed. They have been doing that since day one. I guess they feel it's not something they need to brag about, just like they never mention when they make minor improvements to their product line.

Well, if they don't brag about it, then people have no way of knowing whether two speakers are matched or not and hence this argument. Anyway, I did contact Totem last night and just received this response:

-----

Hello Amir,

yes indeed....

not only is the finished product tested against a reference but individual components such as tweeter, woofers and crossover components are also "paired" and "matched" to every distinct pair

for instance.....although we use very high quality parts there is always a tolerated discrepancy........ sometimes 3%, sometimes 1%, etc....... what we do is match every pair of tweeters, woofers, crossovers to very exact standards so each pair is an identical

a great example is our latest stereophile review of the TOTEM MANI-2 ............being a unit that has been in production for over 12 years it has been reviewed several times

John Atkinson found in his measurements that over the 12 years the mani-2 has deviated very little from sample to sample

a true accomplishment considering that span of time

take care,

TOTEM
-----

I am pretty impressed that they would take the time to respond in such a personal manner and of course, by the fact that they do test and match components.

Still, I would have been happier if OP had finished the test, broken in the second pair of speakers, and told us of they sounded the same then :). It would have answered more than one thing....

So take the time to visit Totem if thats what you need. I'm sure Vince would be happy to show you around and answer all of your questions.

They are incredibly gracious folks who I know welcome people in for tours and what not. It doesn't hurt that Vince is surrounded by beautiful women, either. That's a tour that even my wife (who has met the folks from Totem and is a HUGE Totem Acoustic fan) wants to base a vacation on.

Do people get all sappy about Totem in a way that few other speaker manufacturers enjoy? Yes. Is there reason for it? You bet your sweet a$$. They build one hell of a speaker and I run 'em all over my house (even in my garage). While I am no longer an AV dealer, were I to choose to go back to it (bloody unlikely), Totem would be the first vendor I picked up on the first day.

I've installed systems, and come back a few months later to say to myself, that sounds much warmer. I found this true with Sunfire subs, they seemed to loosen up after time. However I met with my rep one day and asked him about it, and Bob Carver happened to be there, the rep differed to him. Bob said that break in made negligible difference. I like to still think he is wrong, but I just install this stuff.

Are you saying that he doesn't listen, or that he can't hear? :-)

It's a shame, because I was blown away on a couple of occasions (at shows) when I heard the Totems, and I'm a super speaker nerd... and know a good speaker when I hear one (or two)!
However at the Atlanta show, I was really stunned at the demo, and program material they were demoing, etc. It was a pretty underwhelming presentation (imho).
I was really excited to show a couple of my partners their stuff, but was really dissapointed in what they pulled off there, because I really wanted my partners to see what I had been yacking about over the last 10 months or so, and was actually pretty embarassed, when we went to their "area".

Personally it didn't change my opinion of the product, but I just couldn't understand the less than optimum presentation @ CEDIA, but my peeps looked at me like I was out of my mind when we gave them a listen. The booth had no ceiling, and you could barely hear the speakers over the background din and noise on the convention floor.

My rep is willing to loan me a pair, and I'd love to have my partner hear them in a better environ, with music he is familiar with etc.

If things get slow here, you can count on at least a three pager from the following:

1. Do speaker wires and interconnects all sound the same?

2. Do turntables sound better than CD players?

3. Does breaking in a speaker make it sound better?

4. Is C4 better than TrueBlue?

Mission accomplished! :^)

Try bringing up any of these subjects over at AVSforums and then run for cover

And:

Are a lot of AVS Forum guys made up of fat, angry, lonely, unemployed, losers, living in their parent's basements, with nothing better to do than sit around in their underwear, eating cold pizza, and debating endlessly online, for the sake of debate and nothing else???

39 can you create a pic of this image???
