Hey Guys,

CEDIA defends "Electronic Lifestyles®" Trademark, denies claims of Bose suit
Association has held trademarked slogan since 1998

Indianapolis, Ind - Bose Corporation has filed suit in the United States Patent and Trademark Office to cancel CEDIA's four federal trademark registrations for its mark "Electronic Lifestyles®." CEDIA began using "Electronic Lifestyles" in 1995 in connection with the association's non-profit activities. In 1998 and 1999, CEDIA received four federal trademark registrations for "Electronic Lifestyles."

Bose, which is a CEDIA member, markets a line of loudspeakers known as "Lifestyle®." In its suit, Bose claims that CEDIA's "Electronic Lifestyles" trademark so resembles Bose's "Lifestyle" trademark as to cause confusion. CEDIA denies that confusion exists or is likely, and CEDIA is defending the proceeding vigorously.

Ray Lepper, CEDIA's President, said: "We are extremely disappointed that Bose has taken this drastic action to cancel CEDIA's trademark registrations. CEDIA is a non-profit trade association dedicated to improving our members' businesses and promoting the custom electronic industry. CEDIA does not manufacture or sell loudspeakers - or any physical product under the "Electronic Lifestyles" trademark. We believe it is ludicrous for Bose to maintain that our trade association's "Electronic Lifestyles" mark could give rise to confusion based on Bose's "Lifestyle" line of loudspeakers.

"Moreover," continued Lepper, "this association has been built by the long, tireless efforts of thousands of volunteers and sponsors, and to have our trademark challenged in this manner by one of our very own members is very disturbing. To sue one's own association is wholly inconsistent with the spirit of cooperation and sacrifice that is the hallmark of the true CEDIA member."

Billilynne Keller, Executive Director of CEDIA said: "While other manufacturers are busy donating funds and products to CEDIA, Bose is spending its resources pursuing legal proceedings against our association, causing us to spend untold thousands of dollars of our members' money in legal fees, and wasting staff's time that could be better spent promoting the association and the industry. We would much rather see Bose work for our association, instead of against it."

All inquiries should be directed to CEDIA's counsel.

CEDIA is a global trade association of companies that specialize in designing and installing electronic systems for the home. The association was founded in September 1989 and has approximately 2,900 member companies worldwide. CEDIA members are established and insured businesses with bona fide qualifications and experience in this specialized field. CEDIA is a not-for-profit organization based in Indianapolis, Ind. For more information on CEDIA, visit the association's web site at http://www.cedia.org or call 1-800-669-5329."

I guess the BOSE corporate lawyers were at the bottom of their to do list. Mmm, I wonder about the wisdom of this marketing strategy (release safety, aim at foot, not the one in mouth at the moment, and pull trigger).

BOSE obviously recognized that they didn't have many friends in the retail shops that support CEDIA.
Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence.

Only because it blows at the moment.

BOSE obviously recognized that they didn't have
many friends in the retail shops that support
CEDIA.

But, lining up with AVAD, they must have believed they would win a certain percentage of installers, also CEDIA types. I don't get it.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Unfortunately, some dealers will always sell Bose. For those with no conscious, it is easy to sell to unsuspecting Paul Harvey listeners. I keep wondering if someday Paul Harvey will tell "the rest of the story".

I refuse to install Bose anything. As soon as the client mentions Bose, I try to educate them as to the ripoff. If they don't believe me, I tell them to go to one of my competitors. There are several with no consious who would happy to take the money of a fool.

I'm still waiting to buy one of those "Bose Sucks!" T-shirts. It would be my favorite shirt.

I just found this link and it seems to be one of the most informative readings on Bose technology I have seen.

[Link: intellexual.net]

I really like where he says "the Bose 3-2-1 can not be described as anything less than a crime against sound reproduction."

Let's hope some of this get's out to consumer's ... it's about time that junk ... er bose ... is exposed fot what it is ... Hey, I have no problem with them selling their product, but STOP marketing it as quality or "high end" ... my suggestion ... $199 packages and start competing with their TRUE competitors KLH etc.
