Hey guys.
I have a customer that has a pair of B&W 805's a Rotel RC 1070 preamb, a Rotel RB 1080 Amp. Problem is the left side 805 speaker has blown 3 times, 1st time replaced speaker, 2nd time replaced speaker and amp (works fine in store) called today said left siide is gone again (speaker) he is also getting a hum in the right side, since the left side blew.
Any suggestions, if it is the preamp, why would it work for two months then go out, I guess the same could be said for the amp and speakers. I'm not understanding why it always on the left side.
Pioneer pdf 27 cd player and audio out of a laptop.
Do not know if all three times if the same source was being played, or if that would make a difference.
Customer claims that he was not cranking it up, and was listing to Dave Mathews type stuff, but he is a college student in a dorm, and maybe he didnt realize how loud it may have been. But that still doesnt explain why always the left side.

Any input would be great.
thanks in advance.

My first instinct is to suspect that there is DC present on the output; likely culprit is a bad output transistor.

If your customer is playing laptop output thru the system it may not react well to a common ground between the two channels on the input. Definately a reach.

WOW! that's bizarre. The Rotel 991, the predecessor to the 1080 loved to blow fuses on the left channel but never speakers! The 1080 seems slightly more prone than the rest of their amps(again fuses not speakers) but that could be strictly coincidence for our location. I'd definitely send that off to Rotel as there is definitely something wrong!!!The only known issue I believe with the 1080 is that some of them run hot from the factory and some bias settings have to be adjusted to fix it.
