I met with a client who wants to install a projector "in" their patio, and have it there year round.

The area is covered, so rain wouldn't get it wet but humidity and condensation would definately be a factor.

What pitfalls am I looking at?

I would say light and bugs would be the first two that I would think about.  How big do you think a mosquito or a moth would look on the screen as he flies through?  I have a covered deck as well (roof no walls). I didn't think rain would get in either until the first time mother nature decided to throw rain sideways.

hard to say, would depend where you are (snow and cold would make it impossible here) and what "covered" means. Some other obvious ones are insects (i.e. getting in the projector), animals (birds, raccons, squirels...), burglars, heat, dust, polution.

The best (easiest) solution would be to bring it in when used, but if not I would either buy or build an enclosure for it. For example [Link: tempestlighting.com]

I had a proposal I did once for this idea..... Covered patio, Clients wanted a screen that would face the pool. They actually had the perfect set up. I would install the screen in the soffit and speced a Da-Lite tensioned motorized screen with the rear projection screen material and a projector and lift. I was going to build a completely weatherproof box that was climate controlled ( the air vent was right behind where i was going to build this) and have the lift go into that. I also was going to add rain and wind sensors just incase and program that into the system.

However the deal feel through because the client lost his job...I am still hoping he calls me when he gets back on his "feet"

However I never thought of the bugs....completely slipped my mind

I've seen some "award winning" pics of outdoor installations where [it looks like] the projector is mounted on a lift that raises into the home's attic.  Some even had drop down rear projection screens so you would be looking towards the house to view the image.  I think that would take care of the outdoor weather aspect, but then you have to deal with all the fun of housing a nice projector in an attic.

The issues of bugs arent as bad as you would think. Outdoors is no worse than a smoky pub or sports bar as far as ongoing maintenence is concerned.
I have several units out in the field and do not get anymore calls to service these than a regular indoor projector. As long as they dont get wet there is little difference from inside to outside.
I have a few fitted in ceiling boxes which retract when not in use and this is definitely the way to go if there is any chance it will get rained on.
I am doing one on Friday for another dealer to use as a permanent installation at a nature park. High output twin lamp NEC and custom 5m wide screen. Im sure this one is going to give trouble because the 'custom weatherproof, $5000.00 enclosure' specified is built out of swiss cheese metal and close to the edges of the structure so its sure to get wet and full of possums! Oh well, their problem, not mine...
Wireless speakers? Of course Sir. Choose the colour and size you like. As you don't seem to think sound quality is important, I will not plug them in.
