I ran into the same thing. I have no sophisticated graphics program at all, just plain old Paint. I found that if I change the artwork from color to black and white, I can then open the artwork in ProntoEdit (I assume that step is where you hear that you have too many bits per pixel).

I have no clue what to do if that is not it.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

You need a more sophisticated program such as Paint Shop Pro, Fireworks, or Photoshop. Then you can change the color value of the image to 256 colors which is 8 bits per pixel.

Actually, the Paint program will support 256 colors, just take the image and do a "save as" and then choose "256 color bitmap" in the drop down list at the bottom. No need to convert images to black and white, all pronto models will load 256 color .bmps. Non-color remotes will convert them to grey scale.

McNasty's correct however, for much better results, a better graphics program is required.
