We usually do the Integra, but sometimes it's out of the pricerange at $600.

Anyone have any favorites out there that has fast load times and Discrete IR, or RS232?

I've been using the Samsung BD-P1500, but searching for other options.

TIA

Between Blu-Ray load time and HDMI dropping connection... I hope the AV Gods have had their fill of Cruel and Unusual Humor at our expense.

My favorite BluRay player is the one that shows disc content in under 10 seconds, has power OFF discrete, 232, ejects a disc within 3 seconds, plays all standard def content and doesn't crash and burn with updates.

Will someone let me know when the above is fulfilled? Until then they all suck equally.

1) PS3 with Schmartz IR PRO Bluetooth to IR controller [Link: schmartstuff.com]

With the IR PRO and some sort of power sensing remote control system (e.g. RTI RPx, URC MSC400, etc.) the PS3 is controllable with discrete on/off. You can do power sensing via the PS3 USB port. I have installed this combo for several customers, and it has the advantage of being the fastest booting Blu-ray player available. Disadvantage is there is some extra installation time to get everything working and some find the noise level of the PS3 objectionable. Personally I think the noise thing is a non-issue. Other disadvantages are no profit margin on the PS3 and the cost of the IR PRO ($100). Also if the receiver does not have an HDMI input you won't get support for the hi def audio formats.

2) Panasonic DMP-BD35K or DMP-BD55K. This is about the fastest booting standalone player out there. Discrete on/off - easy to integrate. Use the BD35K if you have an A/V receiver which can decode the hi def audio formats via HDMI. If client has a receiver which does not decode the hi def audio formats, but has multichannel analog inputs, use the BD55K. BD55K can decode the the hi def audio formats internally and pass audio to a receiver via its 7.1 analog outputs. Or you can up sell customer to a new receiver which decodes hi def audio (I like the Yamaha RX663) at the same time you sell him a BD35.

I just installed a Sharp 21 BD player and I am going to try to return it to my disty because I hate it. Slower than hell and no discretes. I'll try to get a Panny.

The yammy Bluray is made by Panasonic. It's not too bad but I'm not sure why its so much more expensive then the Panny.

These players sound good. Are you sure about the discrete power?

Yes, absolutely. All the Panny's I've used since the BD-30 have had discrete on and off. Amazing player for the price.

I'll second that Dawn is correct - I have installed several and they do indeed have discrete on/off.

i wonder how long it will be before blu ray fades . .
i know they are being pushed heavily by sony etc . .

but its just a matter of time till downloadable digital media (apple tv, vudu, netflix, etc) quality is just as good as blu ray.

at that point,
why would we need blu ray?

you have never seen a Blu-ray have you?

but its just a matter of time till downloadable

well everything is a matter of time, records where not here for ever, tapes where not here for ever, CDs won't be here for ever, VHs was not around for ever and DVD will not be around for ever. Everything will have its time and it can be short or long. That being said IF we assume BD gets replaced by DL and not something else then DL won't be realistic for mass adoption for at least 10 or 20 years, so why care about it now? you don’t even know what DL it will be you get a player that does netflix and apple or Vudu wins you lose, you do Apple and one of the other two wins you lose just as much.... and if you want my opinion when DL can become main stream and there is a contender that is pushed and becomes popular I don't think it will be any of the ones that is currently available.

at that point, why would we need blu ray?

I like buying movies, given the choice between a rental and buying I will always pick buying (and there are many others like me). And disks are much more reliable and easy then an HDD based DL system. For example last weekend I went to my sisters, I brought Kung foo panda and Hellboy 2 could I have done it as easily if it was on the HDD? Just take it, throw it in my bag and go?

I used to think that buying movies was dumb, because I wouldn't watch one movie enough times to make it worthwhile. Then someone, here I think, compared the cost of a DVD with the cost of actually going to the movies. DVDs cost less unless you go solo and smuggle in your goodies.

Aside from the glorious spectacle of seeing certain body parts actually five feet high on the screen (or wide, if you like), and seeing explosions large enough that you think debris will hit you, there's not much incentive for those of us with decent systems to go to the movies except for the "first on the block" syndrome. Keeping up with what's new, a vain chase at best, is not as good as having a movie on disc that you actually might want to see again a year from now without having to locate it online.

Guys, I hate the spelling "Blu-ray," but that's what it is. Can we please just learn it so that when we want to look up these threads in the future, we won't have to try every spelling we can think of?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Does anyone know if the HDMI and component are live at the same time on the DMP-BD35K?
